Can anyone recommend a good FLAC media player for Windows?

Also, would burning a FLAC album to an audio CD have any negative impact on the quality of the sound that would be noticeable?

ETA: I know FLAC is CD quality, just unsure if burning an audio disc on a run of the mill laptop will cause any noticeable difference.

Marco... Question since I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on some things.

The vandersteens... I've read a lot on their site and others. It looks like they come with detailed instructions on how to set them up. There seems to be a sweet spot for listening to them. As I've come to find out with most speakers that have anything to do with audiophile type listening.
It's just me and wife... We always have people over. If I'm playing music through these things and people are not in front of these in the "sweet spot" will they still sound good?

Our home is shotgun style. From front to back: living room (aka listening area), the dining area and then the kitchen. It's basically completely open from the front door to the back door.

I just don't want them to sound like crap if I'm cooking in the kitchen or entertaining people. I assume they won't, but this is a pretty solid investment and I want to make sure I'm doing it the right way for what I'm looking for. I also realize they won't sound as good as sitting in front of them... Just want to make sure I'm getting what I need.

You will be fine. Don't over think it--get 'em, plug 'em in, start playing music.

You won't be able to discern the finer points about the speaker until you log 1000 hours in front of them anyway...just like driving a new car--you feel a lot more confident about it's handling after 30k miles than 5 miles behind the wheel.

If you want to hear them in the back while in the kitchen--turn the volume knob to the right...

JRiver is the go to for Windows.

Unless your CD players DAC is terrible, you will not hear any real discernible difference.

There are arguments about the mechanical portion of the CD drive system (the transport) adding a bit of noise, but that argument usually arises in $100+k audio rigs that have the ability to reveal such incredibly fine nuances.

FWIW, my rig is around that territory and I hear no difference in a streaming lossless file played from a SSD versus my CD transport.

Also, unless you are playing the file from a thumb drive or stick, the point is moot--as your computer HD is probably an optical drive and is essentially a spinning disc being read by a laser pick up--same as a CD player...

Heading to Audio Dave's place in Thibadoux tomorrow around 2 ish (mega rig). The other Dave from Metairie is going as well (the one with the open baffle loudspeakers and low powered tubes).

You are welcomed to come along. We will probably hang out there a couple hours.

Hit my cell of you want to go.

Alright Marco.... So the process got started!

I know I prolly should've got it new, but music direct had the quad as a demo for $599. Couldn't pass it at the price.

Also... I'm still undecided on the TT yet, but I found the vpi nomad on a site called overture. Overtureav.com

They have them for 699. Should I get that or get the pro ject Carbon? I know it's got a built in phono and the amp has a DAC (I think). I know you've recommended it before...
Not sure about the site ... or if I should just got ahead and get the nomad.

Go with the VPI.

Overture is the real deal--I have been to their store in Delaware. They are a Mac, Focal, Audio Research dealer amongst a few others.

good deal...

It says they are a close out... Guess maybe vpi is doing away with it? Or changing it up? Cause they are hard to find.

Edit:

Having trouble buying it... Says $699, but charging me $995. Can't figure it out. Gonna call them tomorrow

Alright Marco.... Spoke with a guy named Dave Masson at overture. Only one they have left at $699 is the floor model. He says everything is guaranteed and full warranty. I asked him about the cart and he said its in perfect working order.

Secondly, he said that he could maybe work out a little something on a brand new one if I decide against the floor model. He couldn't promise it, but said he could try.

What you think?

I looked at the numbers: Carbon/Lehman- approx $760
: nomad floor- $699
: nomad new- $995; if they knock off 20% $796

Not sure... Maybe call back and see what they could do on the new one?

Anyone have some advice for a person thinking about buying their first turntable?

Places like Overture aren't like BestBuy...you don't have complete moron customers just walking up and playing with the audio gear. The table was probably set up in a system in a dedicated room, and when someone wanted to hear it, the sales person would probably operate the system.

Keep in mind, places like overture sell systems north of $300k, so the clientele that is in there usually are audio geeks that not only know the gear and how to operate it, but also respect the pieces of the retailer.

You should be fine with either option. The cartridge may have 100 hours on it--no big deal. Carts are good for about 2-3000 hours of play before they begin to wear out.

Thanks Marco!

I'll call tomorrow. See what they can do on a new one and go from there. Getting kinda excited about this. The amp should be here this week and the turn table I'm assuming soon as well. Will just need the speakers and cables.

Man... Marco I'm wearing your arse out!

Ordered the nomad from overture. Guys were super nice on the phone. They repackaged the table, played it and made sure everything was like new. The guy said and forgive me b/c I forgot to send this earlier... VPIs do not come with phono (somethings) and asked me if I needed them. I didn't really think about what he was asking until later tonight. I was thinking cables... But kicked myself for not speaking with him about it.
I'm assuming I need whatever they are... But for the life of me I can't remember what he said. Phono outs maybe? It was phono something that they don't come with...

Most high end tables do not come with cables or a phono stage (pre amp).

You will need both.

Edit:

It was just cables they were talking about. Got the nomad and insured shipping for $724.

I'm ordering the kimber 4PR speaker wires that you recommended. Does it matter which phono cables to get? Also... This may be the dumbest of all the questions I've had
When I order the phono cables I just need to order one and not a pair right?
They have some audio quest black mambas that have good reviews, but I wasn't sure if I should stick with kimber or not.

Now just have to order the speakers and cables!
