Just wanted to let all of you know that I really have appreciated the help over the past few months. The DC Carbon blows the Audio Technica completely out of the water. Like night and day. Also have ~10 records now. #feelsgoodman
One slight issue, though: the platter (or the turntable) is uneven in one spot causing the stylus to lift in one area. What's the best way to fix the issue without dropping a bunch of money?

I tend to appreciate the look and in my limited listening experiences, I liked the pairing of the vintage receivers and vintage speakers.
I just upgraded my vintage speakers so I can tell you a little about this philosophy. I had a pair of Bose 901s Series IV. They were awesome at reproducing any live recording because of the soundstage but when listening to anything that contained minutia it lacked severely.
Recently upgraded to some PSBs and the difference was amazing. Speaker technology has come much farther than I ever expected.

Huh. My Audio Technica doesn't have this problem. Huh.

The platter should be completely flat. If it isn't, send it back. The platter's being stable and smooth plays a HUGE part in reproduction.
I am curious as to how the platter is warped? It is sitting on the spindle crooked? Is the spindle itself not level?
Can you post a few pics? Maybe I can see better what you are talking about.
That is an odd issue.

Thanks to all who have kept this thread alive and helped us novices get into vinyl. The SO other purchased a turntable for me a few years ago, and now that that I have a little time I decided to get a decent beginner setup happening. I need a little advice on speakers. After reading this thread and a couple of other reviews on cnet, I may go with the Energy Take Classic 5.1. I wanted to spend $500 or less, and it's $300 right now. I plan on using it for Spotify as well. My current speaker state is abysmal, so a change needs to happen!
Is there anything else I should consider? The Audioengine P4s look pretty sweet, but for a little more the Energy Take seems worth the difference.

Haven't had time to really mess around with the turntable because of studying. I messed around with the platter and it seems to somewhat fixed the issue (the stylus still moves slightly in the same spot). I'll post some pics when I get more time to fool around with it. Other than that the turntable sounds great

Have these. Love 'em. I'll be using these speakers for a long time

I highly recommend Boston Speakers. These are $300 a piece, but you can find them cheaper.

I tell everyone this...subscribe to Stereophile magazine--paper rag or online. You will learn a lot as the pages are filled with advertisements as well as reviews of off the charts expensive gear and extreme beginner gear.
The great part about reading about uber expensive audio gear is that while you may not be able to afford it, you begin to understand WHY these things cost what they do, thus giving you a better understanding of how components should be built.
Once you understand these concepts, you are better equipped to make a good call on the budget gear.
They do also review a good bit of budget gear every month.
A subscription is about $15 a year--well worth it.
I would also recommend going to their website and searching for reviews of budget components--free to read the back log. I believe you can also search by price range.
I will always recommend Focal--the entry level line of bookshelf speakers is now 40% off MSRP at Music Direct. I started with Focal 13 years ago and moved up the line a couple times eventually attaining the Utopia series. The lesser lines retain a good bit of the sonic signature of the Utopia big guns up the line, but you just don't get as big a sound as you do with really the big loudspeakers.

I also recommend Audiokarma...probably one of the best audiophile forums out there. They also have their own marketplace if you subscribe ($15 a year) and you can get some good deals on quality stuff.

Leon Bridges' new album comes out this Tuesday. It was made to be on vinyl, old school Motown sound that will surely give people flashbacks to the good ole days. Can't wait for it.

Thanks for the advice! I received the Focal speakers yesterday and setting up tomorrow. I may need to invest in a better preamp will find out soon. I have one picked out already though. Excited to hear how my vinyls will sound.

Got the Chorus 705V. It was out of those and another pair that was double the price... told my SO about the cheaper ones first though... rookie mistake. I think they will work nicely still, and I plan on upgrading with time of course. Ordered some Monoprice wire and plugs as well.
