Which Pro-ject are you talking about? Debut Carbon DC?

So, I'm going with the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon in gloss black. Got a deal that I couldn't pass up on it. I also ordered a pair of the Klipsch R-15PM to get me going for the time being.

Great looking record & cover art, sure it sounds even better!

Late spin...it's been out a while but after dozens of listens I think I like this record even better than Easy Tiger...I feel like "Doomsday" musically is a more upbeat "I Taught Myself How To Grow Old" (my favorite Adams downer)...same E-flat key and all...

So, my dad has a Kenwood kd-55r that he uses pretty regularly. I'd like to upgrade his cartridge for Father's day. Right now he has a Realistic rx1500, which I know nothing about. I'm thinking about getting him an Ortofon 2M Red. What say you?

That takes what is called a "P-mount" cartridge...It has 4 pins in the end and slides directly into the end of the tonearm.

A regular mount cart mounts to the underside of a "headshell" at the end of the tonearm with a pair of vertical long screws.

Grado makes a decent one.

The Ortofon may come in a P-mount as well...look on Ortofon's site.

Ortofon makes one

There is also an adapter made, but I don't know if your table's tonearm's counterweight can adjust enough to offset the additional weight.

Also know that you will have to reset the VTF...vertical tracking force--that is the downward weight of the needle on the record.

Every cart comes with a specific VTF in the manual in the box. You can get a cheap VTF scale to measure this. It is a critical measurement. If it is way off, you will defeat the purpose of getting a new cart.

As I'm looking more into that turntable, it doesn't seem to have the best reputation. I also don't see an obvious way to adjust the VTF on it, so I'm starting to wonder if we ought to spend a little bit more and just get him a new table. He also had it in an enclosed media rack for years with a lid, so he has no dust cover for it.

I could buy him a decent table for the cost of a new cartridge and dust cover.

I thought that...

You replied as Galactic Inquisitor as if you were Jester...

Did you get alters mixed up?

For the record (pun intended!)---now that I think about it, P-mount carts are usually put on very cheap tables that lack an adjustable counterweight on the rear of the tonearm. But, most P-mounts are very close in cartridge weight and probably have a similar VTF.
It's when you add the converter that you will throw off the VTF.

If you can swing the extra money, absolutely go with a ProJect Debut or a U-Turn--both are heavier and better 'tables and have better carts installed from factory.

I didn't realize my brother was logged into that computer or something. A big issue for the table for our dad is that he is not in great health and has essential tremors, so automatic is pretty important. I was able to find a Marantz TT42 in perfect condition for $150 from someone I trust like family, so I'm getting that one for him.

My Debut Carbon is on the way.

Awww Yeah!!

Got a new toy this week...a Nakamichi CR-7A cassette deck.

Before you laugh, please understand that this ain't your daddy's cassette deck. This, along with the Nakamichi Dragon, are commonly cited as the two best cassette decks ever built. The CR-7A was made in 1986, and back then, sold for $1850 ($4130 in today's money). This was the Japanese answer to extracting the absolute limits from the cassette tape.

This deck has the ability to make minute azimuth adjustments of the playback head (there is a motor attached to the pinch wheel that lifts up to touch the captain which pulls the actual tape over the head--a move as little as 1/10 of a millimeter left or right affects high frequencies, and this can be adjusted via a knob).

It has a crazy low wow & flutter (.027%)--the lowest of any cassette made. Frequency response is 18Hz-21k Hz!!

This unit was picked up locally in New Orleans from the original owner.

Cosmetically, it doesn't have as much as a hairline scratch--absolute mint.

Mechanically, the idler wheel (the rubber wheel that engages the FF & RW spindles) has hardened from age. The drive belts are also a little hard, but work.

I did a little bit of maintenance this week to get the idler gear to work temporarily, but it will need to be replaced.

There are 3 main service techs in the U.S. For Nakamichi cassette decks...California, Virginia, and Connecticut. It will soon be shipped to One of them for an overhaul.

They will pull the entire deck down, clean off all old hardened grease and pull down all 4 motors and totally rebuild them. All belts and worn capacitors are replaced as well. All heads are laser aligned for precise tracking, and special Nakamichi test tapes are run to adjust all parameters of sound and frequency response.

The repair shops claim that it will perform as the day it came off the assembly line when completed...and they back it with a 2 year warranty. The guys doing the overhauls are all retired, certified Nakamichi techs that came out of retirement, as there seems to be a current demand for restorations of these decks.

It runs around $1000 for the Full Monty, complete overhaul...although that sounds crazy high, a fully restored, mint condition Nakamichi CR-7A cassette deck currently fetches around $2500 on eBay. Here is a CR-7A on eBay that is $2150, and still needs an overhaul (any cassette deck that is 30 years old needs it done--even if you think it plays just fine).

As I said earlier, this and the Dragon are the Holy Grail of cassette decks.

One neat thing is that I picked up around 80 cassette tapes while at Amoeba Records in L.A. last week--at around $1-2 each!!

The Natalie Merchant "Tigerlilly" cassette shown here was new old stock--still in original wrapping--first time played.

And yes--this is a new cassette of Ryan Adams "1989"

Gotta say, it sounds pretty friggin good!

Here are some of the cassettes I picked up in L.A. ...

Pretty cool all those cassettes were available out there...I have no idea where all mine are; haven't seen them in a couple decades
