Very interesting story here...

Some of the regulars to this thread may recall about 50 pages back I told the story about the Tulane Law student that I helped out by loaning him some of the extra audio gear I had laying around the house. I do this to help young audiophiles get started and introduce them to the other guys that are into audio gear and music.

Long story short, the guy ignored my calls for about three months (I wasn't calling him for the gear, but just to stay in touch), and then left the city and headed back to the northeast with all of my gear (about $1500 worth of stuff). One of the pieces that he took Was a Pioneer PL-41 turntable that my uncle had brought back from the Vietnam War, so it had a little bit of a sentimental value. I had also just had the bearing rebuilt and put a new Sumiko Blue Point Evo III cartridge on it ($500).

I was more pissed off at the fact that I was helping him out getting started in audio, and he screwed me by taking off. I located him about six months later and called him at his new place of work (A judge clerk in Delaware--thanks Google!). He fed me a bunch of bullshite, and then would just hang up on me.

After about a year, I just let it go...this was 2010.

Here is the interesting part...

Two weeks ago, I received an email from this guy. I did a double take when I saw his name in the inbox. His email started out extremely apologetic and then proceeded to explain that he was an addict and has now been clean for two years. I suppose he was making amends for his five or so years of screwing people. He told me he had all of the gear and would ship it back to me.

I emailed him back, gave him my address, and wished him well in his recovery. He responded back to me again thanking me for the opportunity to do this.

So today the box arrived---but as I sort of expected, it wasn't perfect. I knew what awaited inside the box when I saw the condition of the outside of the box.

The guy actually did not beat up the table at all, but he packaged it like a kindergartner would have. The turntable got pretty beat up in transit. The tonearm was bent, the platter is chipped, the plinth is chipped up, the thick plastic dust cover is broken into 3 separate pieces, and all the small parts had been knocked off or bent.

This guy graduated from Tulane Law!!--and can't properly box a 40 lb. table for transit!

Fortunately, there are a couple of new dust covers and donor turntables on eBay. It will probably cost me around $300 to get it back where it should be.

Below are pics of what he sent me...notice the bend in the tonearm, headshell, all the chips on the plinth, and destroyed dust cover. This table was MINT when I lent it to him.

I guess I am aggregated in the fact that it was still mint a few days ago--his shitty bubble wrap and single, thin cardboard box packaging is what destroyed it!...the platter popped out during shipping and bounced around like a pin-ball all over the rest of the table--with enough force to bend the frigging armtube and gouge the steel plinth. There were small pieces all over the inside of the box.

Here is the Pro-Ject phono stage and cables...

The Sumiko cartridge is missing as well as the Clearaudio record clamp ($650 for both)--I wrote those off.

But hey!!...I got the old table back and will now work on getting it back to spec!

You get the TV hooked up yet?

Yup. Ran by bestbuy b/c going into wal marks makes me want to jump into traffic. Looked in their regular stuff and they only had a toslink and I needed an optical only. Didn't realize toslink had a different end on it than a straight optical cable. Went into the "magnolia" section to see what they had. Had a lower end audioquest, wasn't paying $70 for the 10ft though. Why the guy gave me the lowdown in why I needed it, I explained what I had in the vandys, quad and my current cables. He chilled on the need to explain the why....

Anyways ended up having a return that they gave me 1/2 price on. Guess cause I b/s'd with them about music and sound for a bit. So paid $35 for the 10ft cable. Everything works and sounds great. Put on rogue one and it sounds damn good, also played a couple concerts as well.

Damn dude I am so sorry! It sucks to get taken advantage of when you are being generous. You of all people don't deserve this.

Here's my sad story. Not quite like yours, but aggravating. About 5 years ago, as I was just really getting into audiophile stuff, I had acquired and restored some 70s Marantz receivers. I had a 2252B in great condition, but at the time I wanted a rare and powerful 2325. I found one on eBay in Syracuse and messages the guy, asking if he'd be interested in a cash plus receiver trade. He took his ad down and agreed to sell me the 2325 for $200 and the 2252B that I had. Naive me, jumped at the offer and made the deal offline. I sent him the receiver FedEx but forgot to require signature. The guy initially said he would ship his unit after I gave him the shipment confirmation and the money. So after I did that, he reneged on that and said he'd have to wait until he receives the unit. At this point I was worried. A few days later, fedex showed the package as delivered and he said he never got it, of course. I looked up his address and it looked pretty shady. A quad Plex but it had a screened in porch. The fedex guy even put in the notes that he left it inside the porch. But because I neglected to require a signature, I was basically SOL. I think I at least recovered the cash through PayPal dispute. But similar to your situation, the guy kind of went off the radar and stopped answering texts. I finally saw him on gchat one day and he said his phone got disconnected blah blah blah. I didn't tell him off, because it wouldn't have done any good at that point. I had no proof that he conned me, but I'm sure he did. A hard lesson learned for me.

On the flip side, I eventually acquired a MArantz 150 tuner with a nice scope on it. A few months after purchase, the scope started having issues, so I tried fixing it with some help of the nice posters on audiokarma forums. After a 30+ page of getting nowhere and taking it to some guy in town who made me pay him $50 to tell me that it needs a full restore, a poster on audiokarma offered to fix it for free. I'd talk to the guy on the phone several times and he helped me fix my first old busted receiver. I sent it to him and sure enough, he found the issue and fixed it, and sent it back and asked for nothing. I paid the shipping of course and gave him my original user manual for the tuner ( he had the same model).

I think of you much like this person. You give and give and don't ask for much or anything in return. Thank you for being you and providing so much to our community. I'm glad you got your stuff back and I know you will find a way to fix it. I've done some research on dust covers in the past and can dig up some info if you want on the options that I found that were reasonably priced. I'd also recommend using ebuyersedge to set up alerts for your model TT to get notified whenever listings with your TT's model number is in an eBay ad (full table or parts). I found original feet for my MArantz 6300 turntable for a decent price using this, though it took over a year and a lot of patience.

Glad you got your table back!

Oh and for the record..... take off the plastic covers on the optical connections!
Couldn't figure out what the hell was going on.

Thanks for making me feel better and not like a dumb arse! I researched that shite and thought I had an idea. What he showed me had what was basically an aux cable connection on one end and the other had the optical. But, he told me that was what made it toslink..... again that was some ol boy in the tv section.

Never got to that point with the "magnolia" guy. Although, he was sure selling it.

Sounds good though. Played a movie last night and it actually works good "to me". It isn't surround sound, but there is definite distinction b/w right/left and it sounds more like surround than a 2 channel.

It really isn't about the gear--I have enough gear now to build 6 complete rigs and then some. It's just that a semi intelligent person should know how to ship a 40 lb. delicate object. It really was in mint condition before he boxed it up.

As far as getting taken advantage of...there are tens of millions of people out there that will constantly try to cheat/steal for small gains thinking that they got one over on someone...Have you ever noticed that those people usually live in a world of shite with constant self induced problems?

I figure that if they are that desperate to go through the great lengths to rip off someone off for $150, they aren't even worth pursuing--Eventually it catches up with them.

His actions never changed my willingness to lend out gear and get others started--that's what this hobby is all about. The older I get the more I realize the reality in my dad's preaching "what goes around, comes around"...eventually (it took me until my late 30's to begin to see the truth in this statement).

I am sure at some point in this thread some very good suggestions for beginner/budget setups have been mentioned. If so, sorry for bringing it up again. But...

Does anyone have suggestions for a solid beginner build for someone just getting into the hobby? Say with a budget under $500.

This article is probably what I am leaning towards now. For $350-ish total:
Affordable Setup

To break that article down, it suggests:
U-turn Orbit Basic - $179
Pro Ject Phono Preamp - $69
Edifier Bookshelf Speakers - $99

Any glaring issues with starting out with something like that? TIA gents

George Harrison-"All Things Must Pass"...Apple Records, 1970. This is the remastered, 3 LP, 180g box from the 40th Anniversary in 2010.

I have been looking for this for a while and stumbled upon it today at Capital Records in Baton Rouge--so it picked it up. The box and liners are done extremely well, and the vinyl is super quiet...

Marco... question for you.

According to the manual I should be expecting some noise from the motor. Not sure if they mean literally from the motor or sounds from the motor coming through the speakers. It is not coming through the speakers, just from the motor. Kind of sounds like something is rubbing. Almost like the sound a chain makes when it's rubbing against a derailer on a bike. That's the best way I can describe it. Just started this the last time I played some vinyl. May have been the time before, but I had a couple and prolly didn't notice.
Wasn't sure if you had any insight. When I remembered to call VPI it was too late today.

The guy is an idiot for sure, but at the same time, how could such an experienced audiophile not at least communicate that you wanted the turntable shipped properly?

It's actually not a simple thing to prepare a turntable for shipping - it normally goes way beyond just wrapping it up well or whatever. That's why I'm kind of surprised you didn't at least attempt to have the guy make that happen, especially with it having sentimental value.

At least you got the thing back - it's pretty amazing that you did.

Need some help from you guys...

I just moved into a new place and don't have room for my previous vinyl set up. I have about 225 vinyls and now need to find new shelves for them. We have limited space and I want my player and records in the living room. We have a fireplace with a mantle that allows for 12-14 inches wide on each side for a tall shelf to put everything on. Any ideas for a good shelf for this?

I'd say try to find something like this.

But it's a little too wide for your space. You could probably easily modify it to fit the width you want if you have the tools needed and are handy. I use something similar, but it's twice as wide and I modified the top shelf to have no divider, which is where my tuner and amp sit, and the turntable on top of the shelf.
