Saving Private Ryan wasn't as good as Thin Red Line,

I sort of agree.

SPR is two book ends of great battles scenes. I agree with H-town, the old man scene was a little cheesy.

It suffers from Full Metal Jacket complex - outstanding first half, uneven, underwhelming second half.

Wait, the best character in the movie is in the 2nd half.

I hate how the GOONIES cant be on the list since he wasn't the director.

its the greatest story he ever wrote.

Schindler's List is by far his best film.

It's a great, great movie, but so is Jaws. Those are the top 2 with out a doubt for me.

This list is so weird. Jurassic Park should be Top 5.

Nah, it's not that good.

Or maybe the departure from the book and the cheesy as frick T-Rex to the rescue ending has jaded me.

The effects are phenomenal, much of the action and suspense is great, but it's not top 5. I think it's more in the 10-15 range. Maybe bottom third of the top 10.

Spielberg has 3 or 4 real game changing films: Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, Raiders

Jurassic Park set that table for blockbusters, pushed special effects along, and is just a good film. On those notes alone it should jump a few ahead of it. Maybe not Top 3, but 5-8 or so.

My only issue with WotW is that Spielberg tries to keep it almost "too modern," if that makes sense. It had touches of classic 1950s science fiction, but it needed more. It needed to be steeped in that inspiration.

I think it was. 1950s sci-fi gets remembered for its goofy bits, but there was real underlying terror underneath the whole thing. Spielberg really taps into the paranoia at the heart of sci fi, and does a wonderful job driving that home. The scene with the train is perhaps my favorite in any Spielberg film, and one I didn't think he was capable of. For a guy who is derided in some circles as too mainstream and family-oriented, the guy knows how to create an image that will be a long-standing feature of your nightmares.

WOTW is a legit great movie. It just isn't a crowd-pleaser.

And I'm saddened to see all the people knocking Lincoln. It's a movie about ideas, and the action is people talking (it also has the wonderful theme that even high-minded goals are sometimes achieved through less than savory means). Lincoln is a spectacular film because it dares paint Lincoln as a person: funny, vain, giving, petty, and everything in between. This isn't Saint Lincoln, this is politician Lincoln, and he's willing to get his hands dirty, even if he has a noble mind. It's also one of the few movies that really gets into the importance of specific language: I liked a lot of Lincoln breaking down the law, especially in regards to how he argues the south did not secede and thus is not a separate country, so he cannot negotiate with them.

Also, Thaddeus Stevens is one of my favorite people in history, and I liked Tommy Lee Jones enjoying that role to its fullest. No, I do not believe there is anything I would not say or do. Great moment.

Not sure it would even be in my top 15. I know I'm in the minority with that opinion, but I just don't think it's that great of a movie.

I'm with you on this I was never big on JP, out side of Jeff Goldblum and Newman, I didn't really care for the characters. The CGI was cool, but was it a quantum leap ahead of T2? I really don't remember and the T-Rex saves the day

Here's my top 5, in the order I'd see them if they were all playing in theaters today.

1. ET
2. Jaws
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
5. Catch Me If You Can

Schindler's List would probably replace Catch Me If You Can, but seeing it once was enough. Great, great movie, but not one I want to see multiple times.

I do agree with some others on WOTW, i find it gets better with repeat viewings. And I am a big fan of Minority Report.

Jurassic Park maybe was the first in awhile that surpassed the hype maybe. It wasnt a favorite of mine and not only does Trex save the day, it does it in the grand lobby with the When the Dinosaur ruled the Earth banner falling framing the moment.

War of the World struck something in me and has stayed with me to this day. Not like Jaws when you have to think about jumping in water but I watched WOTW about a year after my first born was hatched. That movie terrified me in a new and different way than anything before.

Sorry a movie about the Holocaust didn't have enough CGI effects and gratuitous nudity to accommodate your juvenile attention span. You sound moronic.

Wow, talk about a classic Straw Man Argument! And an ad hominem attack. You should have gone for Godwin's Law and made the hat trick!

Who said anything about desiring CGI effects much less nudity?

It's boring, but that has nothing to do with the absence of the aforementioned.

Yeah, I'm not really a SPR fan, but c'mon; it was better than Minority Report .

i really could not disagree with this more. It is long, but moves at a good pace, unlike SPR does take time to develop some great characters, but the 3 main ones (Oscar, Stern and Goeth) especially. Given the heavy, depressing subject matter i get people that don't want to watch it multiple times, but it is fantastic.

I think Minority Report is great, not a slight on SPR at all.

If you can't come up with something better than 'boring' to describe why you don't like one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, you don't deserve more than an ad hominem
