1st, did you watch it disregarding the source material? and then give me your top 3.
Yes. Totally disregarded the source material. I enjoyed the book. I don't think it's the greatest zombie book out there and frankly a little annoyed that Brooks is dubbed "king of zombie fiction" when I can name a few authors I feel do more for the genre.
My top 3, and only my opinion:
1. 1991 Night of the Living Dead
2. Shaun of the Dead
3. WWZ
4. 2004 Dawn of the Dead (bumped from 3)

I've see literally dozens of zombie movies. Great ones. Terrible ones. And many in between.
Those top 4 are ones I could sit down and watch over and over again.
And I'm not a fan of classic Romero films. To me, the most enjoyable one was Diary of the Dead

I know your zombie pedigree, and SOTD and DOTD (2004)are both my favorites.
I'm not ranking WWZ ahead of DOTD though. First, I need to get over seeing it as an adaptation and just see it as it's own movie, then I need to find a way to appreciate the ending.

WWZ ranks highly for me, but mostly because there is such a dearth of good zombie movies it hits everyone's top 4 by default.
I am getting to be a broken record about this, but it would have been a definitive #1 if they stuck to something like the original script.
They could have cut the sexual extortion parts if they wanted.
Just keep the plane going to Russia and make the rest of the movie him trying to get back to his wife rather than tying the whole damn conflict with a neat little bow.

What sexual extortion parts?

On a positive note, the zombies really weren't as bad as we thought they'd old be outside of the ant hill and overturned bus. When we saw the first preview, we thought they would be I Am Legend bad.
that is somewhat refreshing.
If I Am Legend had these zombies..
That movie would be viewed as "Very Good to Great" imo.
oh and if they included the alternate(original) ending instead as well.

The effects for the zombies in IAL was terrible.
Based on the previews, this looks just as bad.
So those of have seen it, how are the effects?

It's funny how some consider I Am Legend to be a zombie flick while others a vampire flick.
It even won an award last year for Vampire Novel of the Century from the Horror Writers Association. But yet one can make the case they are as equal zombie as vampire.
I thought the effects were fine. I liked the "ant pile" symbolism to the zombies swarming and thought some close up zombies looked great and were creepy. (Lab scientist and black woman behind glass).
Very creepy.

Zombie effects weren't distracting and the close quarters shots showed excellent zombie looks.

Even before the ant pile scene, the attack in Philly had me thinking I'd be fricked in this ZA more than any other movie's ZA.

No kidding. The best bet would be to go get AIDS and then go from there.

And just like that, Richard Matheson passed away

Yeah I'd be dead within the first few days of zombie outbreak

I'm reading people complain about the ant pile scene.
Is this not similar to parts in the book where they talked about not being safe in boats?
Didn't the zombies climb on top of each other to reach the surface of the ocean? Or am I not remembering correctly. I read the book like 6 years ago or something.

So the soldier in Korea that was limping. Was he passed by because of the limp or did he have a disease too?
Because if it was just a limp, why even infect yourself? Couldn't everyone just hobble around or would the infected sense that you were really healthy?

This was pretty early on in the movie, but was I the only one who thought the scene where that voice counted up to 12 while that man died and turned was super creepy? That scene sticks with me as being one of the creepier parts even though not that much attention is paid to it.

Still can't believe someone said the movie got the gist of the book
