Definitely a top 10 for me.
Rick is the definitive anti-hero to me.
The story is pretty rich with the great cast of secondary characters in a consummate forbidden love story.
It is one of the most quotable and memorable movies ever and if on, I watch it.

It's not top rated at all, imo. Solid movie but just like Citizen Kane, it's severely overblown with acclaim.

I love it. But then again I'm a pretty huge Bogey fan.
Besides that, it has some characters that have a bit of depth and a mixture of good, bad and in between in them.
Rick himself - the cynic opportunist that does have some ideals after all and is able to overcome his own hurt.
Claude Rains character - crooked police chief that shows some humanity but (IMO) is still a highly shady character.
Even the girl someone mentioned upthread. Fraternizing with the Germans but still has enough patriotic French pride to be moved by the anthem.
Plus, Bogart's supporting cast was so great - Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre giving great performances even in smaller roles.
I love it and find it very re watchable.

Casablanca contains just about everything that is great about old films and almost none of the negative. It's even more impressive considering how fast they were churning out movies during that time period. It's a top 15 movie for me.

That's nails it imo. I did see it in a theater showing a few years ago and watching it with a crowd you realize how funny it is.

African Queen was great because it showed Bogart's range. Well and because it had a great performance from Katherine Hepburn as well.

I really like Casablanca. For me it is easily a top 25 movie. It looks great and the story is good. It isn't overblown like so many of today's productions (it runs less than 1:45). As others have mentioned, the scene with the national anthem is great. Of course it is full of fantastic quotes and has an excellent ending.

It's actually in my top 3. I've seen it at least 10 times. What's amazing is that I believe the movie is filmed before the US really even gets involved in the war.

It's my go to movie to show to people who say they don't like old movies. It's funny, quotable, sexy as hell, and has some genuinely moving scenes. I'm not even that big of a Bogey fan (though I love Ingrid Bergman), but the movie is just about close to perfect. It's a textbook on how to make a film.

Chemistry among the cast was important - really only Paul Henreid didn't get along well with the others. The story is very accessible. The film is paced well. The use of light and shadow - the film had a strong "film noir" vibe (of course, having Bogey, Lorre and Greenstreet didn't hurt this), without being such a film.
It didn't talk down to the audience - about the only pandering was the marketing trying to capitalize on the Allied invasion of North Africa almost on top of the release of the film.
The music theme that tied everything together - very effective villains - Rick's initial moral ambiguity - the film is a homerun because it is lightning in a bottle - unlike Citizen Kane (which I defend - it is technically an amazingly influential film - most people don't get that because they've seen everything duplicated, enhanced, improved, but man - but I think some of its praise is not fully earned) - Casablanca developed its following more organically, over time and deserves it more.
It is arguably my #1 film of all time, so, yeah, definitely Top 5.

I've not seen either and I was born in Clayton County. My library growing up (which I frequented) was Margeret Mitchell Public Library. I haven't read the book either.

For starters, without Casablanca there's no "The Usual Suspects".
Seriously, great acting, great story, may not quite be in my top 10 favorites but it's pretty close.
