No Country for Old Men is probably a movie I was too young to appreciate the first time I saw it. I was about 16, and I felt like I had wasted my time.

Looking back, I can see it was clearly a well made movie with great writing and acting. I will even say it's a great movie, but I won't call it one of my favorites, because it's not.

Yep, that's all.

Because there's a lot of pretention and there are a lot of pretenders on this board. Period. A critical mass has declared it a masterpiece and so anyone with differing views is an idiot. Therefore, many people just conform to the notion that it is some wonderful piece of cinema.

I've seen it once all the way through. That was enough for me. I remember thoroughly enjoying it, but having no desire to ever see it again. Consequently, I will reserve my judgment on the movie other than to say I don't remember it being the best film of the last decade. I actually thought Sicario was better (gasp!).

Pretty much this. He's the smartest guy in the movie (he figured out where Moss was, figured out where the briefcase was) and he also has a sense of humor. And he's absolutely no match for Chigurh. Before he shoots Carson Wells Chigurh tells him:

"If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?"

And that's the point.

It's ok to disagree. I just think it's dumb when someone says it's too slow. It's supposed to be that way. It helps build the suspense

You think I rewatch that movie a couple times a month at my house by myself because of the opinion of a critical mass of people?

I don't think it was great writing... everyone has 20 lines and they all mumble through them. I had to turn my volume up to 11!

It's a lazy response. He gets to make that judgement on people so that he can have to pretension of being better than the shallow snobs. He sees things better than the rest of us clearly. It's being pretentious about pretentiousness.

The movie is too "smart" for you. Stick to dumb movies like Tombstone.

What was the point of Woody Harrelson's character?

to show how evil and different Chigurth is

Why not show the main character dying?

*ETA: i thought you meant Norma Jean. but same reasons as Norma Jean. violence was just a part of this and it was not relevant to the overall point. the movie wasn't Llewellyn's story as much as it was about culture and violence and perceptions

it was much more dramatic to watch him clean his shoes outside of the house to show just how little he cared about killing literally innocent people. it's that small of a footnote in his life, where his main concern is her blood on his shoe and not killing her

quote:

Was Jone's character just there to show an old man who missed the old days?

yes, and you didn't pay attention to the scene with his kin

he opined for the old days, but they were just as violent and crazy as the modern times he loathes. that's kind of the point of the movie (think about those sentences in context of the title "no country for old men" and it tells you the theme of the movie)

The first thing I always ask someone when they say this is, do you enjoy any other Coen Brothers films.

I really enjoyed Fargo and O Brother Where Art Thou? but I though No Country was just alright.

Maybe, like the OP, I had waited so long to see it that people I knew or places like this board built it up so high that I had unreasonable standards for it.

I mean, I don't think it was a bad film and I appreciate its unique style. But I wasn't in awe of it like so many seemed to be.

It's a movie that uses subtle but powerful character development to make a trail for you to follow. It's different from most movies that tell you the story, even stories that are sublime. This movie allows you to experience the sublime by intentionally revealing necessary parts of the characters, their relationships, and the storyline.

I definitely think it is a movie that gets better with re-watching.

I left the movie theater the first time I saw it with many questions and very unsatisfied. Now, I truly enjoy re-watching and revisiting these characters to savor the nuances.

It's one of those few movies that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The way they used silence to build suspense in so many scenes was masterful.

However, the film snobs here are going to laugh at you for missing the oh-so-fine nuances of this masterpiece. They're going to recommend you stick to Transformers because you're unable to comprehend such a fine piece of storytelling.
