Why Does this board love No Country for Old Men?

I finally watched it and thought it was meh.

Spoilers-

Too slow. Boring. What was the point of Woody Harrelson's character? Why not show the main character dying? Was Jone's character just there to show an old man who missed the old days? I mean I get it, the psycho guy is crazy and he kills everyone who looks at him. Blah...

With all the hype this board gives it I was really disappointed. Fwiw it only has like 3.5 stars on Netflix.

Stars on Netflix have nothing to do with a movies quality.. it's based on what your interest in the movie would be. If you see a movie that has 5 stars, it's because Netflix thinks based off of your previously viewed films and preferences. If you're going to use a score to justify your opinion, use a credible rating source.

Also, I disagree. I think it's a great movie, but not everyone has the same taste.

well I can't speak for everyone bit I enjoyed it because to me it was original, had good writing, acting, and directing and I enjoyed the story. Yes I know it's a slow burn I'm sorry you have the attention Span of a child. Perhaps you should stick to Michael Bay and explosions. I hear they're making a new transformers soon

I'll ignore Hawgs childish insult and reply to you. I didn't hate it... I just didn't love it. Reading this board probably overhyped it in my mind too.

As a character driven movie, the performances were superb. I think Woody's character was simply a contrast. Though he was operating in the shadowy world of the drug trade, he was rational and gave you a sense that the main villian was far removed from the norm.

It's suspenseful, full of great performances, and has an interesting premise and narrative. It is a masterful movie, and there's a pretty good argument that it's the best movie of the past decade.

The main character didn't die.

Jones' character is the main character.

In the plot, he is hired to retrieve the money. Thematically, he is overconfident and doesn't heed the random, chaotic nature of the universe.

Partly because he isn't the main character. His death is only relevant for advancing the sheriff's story. The movie is about the sheriff. The other characters are more like forces of nature. Bell is Christian in Pilgrim's Progress. The other characters are the moral lessons - Mr. Worldy Wiseman, Evangelist, Charity, Hypocrisy, Prudence, etc.

No, Jones's character isn't just there for that. And Anton isn't just a psycho crazy that kills everyone who looks at him. I don't think you've gotten it at all. It might not really be your kind of film and that's all right. But I think there's alot more there than you're giving it credit for.

The first thing I always ask someone when they say this is, do you enjoy any other Coen Brothers films.

Those who I ask, almost always respond with no, or who are the Coen brothers?

Another random tidbit about there being alot more depth to the movie, since I'm thinking about it now.

The movie has alot of elements common to Greek tragedies. The plot of a tragedy is typically set into motion due to a tragic hero's error - whether in judgement, in character, or what have you. His flaw sets the story in motion and leads to his demise. In Greek this is "hamartia" which is literally "miss the mark" and AFAIK it was a word associated with archery or javelin throwing prior to theatre. Meanwhile in NCFOM, while Moss's error in judgement/tragic flaw do thematically lead to his demise, the plot is also actually set into motion by Moss literally missing the mark on his hunt.

Geez. Heaven forbid someone disagree with you on something so subjective as a movie.

There are a lot of very careful write ups of this film. If you didn't get it on the first go around consider using a helper so you can pick up on some of the major points you missed on the first viewing. Using this kind of crutch is a little like trying to laugh at a joke after having to have the joke explained but... I think it is well crafted enough that you could still find it worthwhile.

I admit not every movie is for everyone. But there is a lot to NCFOM that you didn't seem to identify.

Movie is a snoozer. Never thought a film about a serial killer with a cool weapon would be that boring
