re: Why does Kevin Costner get so much shite from people?

The Postman and Waterworld were pretty awful and it seemed like Costner let his ego get a bit out of control in making those films. But I do agree with your basic premise that Costner gets too much flak, he's been in more good flicks than bad ones and plays his standard role well.

I think that's definitely true. Costner was the biggest star in Hollywood, and he made those two over inflated, self indulgent movies that both tanked horribly, and his status never recovered...even though he's done other good shite since then. He's supposed to be a huge dickhead, or at least was back then. I think he got too big, and people just wanted to tear him down.

I definitely agree with that.
ETA: I give him credit for at least daring greatly when he bombed.

He bombs lines. Easy lines. Crucial lines. He somehow manages to not put it out there.

I agree. I enjoyed Postman. Hell, I enjoyed Waterworld. You can't take those movies too serious. Enjoy them for what they were.

"American Flyers" with a hot young Rae Dawn Chong and James Evans wearing really tight Bike coaching shorts.

Acting wise he's not great but he's definitely managed to stay busy. I guess taking shitty scripts will do that!
Watch Fandango and Bull Durham.

Does Silverado count? He was so forgettable in that movie.

I dont know how good of an actor he is, but he has chosen his roles, with some exceptions, fairly well. I think he pissed some of the Jews who run Hollywood off some time ago and he's been fairly well blackballed for a while. But the Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and Dances with Wolves are enough to make a career out of and he's done even more than that, so... I'd say he's pretty damn good. And yeah, catches too much flak. It became a pop culture thing to talk about how bad of an actor he is. Which didn't help

How do you make a list without Bull fricking Durham.

From my perspective...
Costner flamed pretty big from the start and was lucky enough to be in some amazing movies that could use his everyman persona.
He stole the show in Silverado, which had people searching out Fandango. Then he hit an amazing streak with Untouchables, No Way Out, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams. Then he topped that run off with Dances With Wolves. That's an amazing stretch of hits.
After that run, he made a lot of bad role choices.
And don't dismiss the fact that Madonna labeled him as being uncool in her "Truth or Dare" documentary. I don't think that it's a total coincidence that his popularity took a steep, downward turn after that appearance.

I know most people didn't care for it, but I actually liked the movie Dragonfly.
And holy shite, there is a Field of Dreams 2?
