Nick Cage can still give an Oscar worthy performance under the right circumstances. He has the talent to do so. Kevin Costner does not.

The fact that Costner was nominated for an Oscar for acting means he's capable of delivering an Oscar-worthy performance.

Costner has two other Oscars and he's also won an Emmy as well as a Golden Globe for his performance in Hatfields & McCoys.

I love MM, but he's exactly like Costner - he's MM in every damn role.

He was even MM in Dallas Buyers, but he lost a shocking amount of weight that distracted the audience from his very MM acting.

In fact, if we're to compare two similar actors in this thread, Costner and MM are the most alike.

MM landed a few perfect scripts that were tailor made for MM - Mud, Lincoln Lawyer, and Dallas Buyers.

No matter if he's played a dragon slaying American soldier in Britain or if he's playing a psycho pedo serial killer in Killer Joe...he's always consistently MM.

He's just figured out that MM performances are worthy of awards if he's smart about his movie selection.

Costner could accomplish the same thing if he made an effort. Hell, I'll go so far as to say that Costner is the more talented individual because he is a seriously damn good award winning director as well.

I didn't consider his TV awards cause I don't know how impressive it is to win Lead Actor in a Miniseries. I don't think that's high on an actor's bucket list.

Nope. Sorry. To wit:

Lone Star
A Time to Kill
Contact
Amistad
The Wolf of Wall Street

If you say he was the same MM in the roles above (just off the top of my head), then you are saying that he's handicapped by a distinctive timbre to his voice and his looks. You are one of those that say Nicholson, Pacino, DeNiro, Cage, Connery, et al, are the same in each of their roles. That approach leaves us with the no one but the character actors and, maybe, Daniel Day Lewis.

Are you serious?!!! He was MM in all of those roles?

I bet I'm not the only one who thinks that.

A Time to Kill - MM
Contact - MM
Wolf of WS - fricking MM

Look, brah, I'm not saying he's bad as MM. Hell, MM is fricking brilliant as MM.

But don't act like he changes a lot from role to role. Same guy in every role. He's just figured out how to select the perfect movie for the MM role.

A Perfect World and Open Range are two of my favorite Costner films along with Field of Dreams, Untouchables, and Postman

Well, true, he was the actor named MM.

Well, that would certainly establish . . . nothing.

No bc I dont like depressing movies, and I admit he got a lot of praise for that role and he could be great in it. But every movie I've seem him in, which is 5 or 6, he's been the same.

You didn't even need to respond. Everyone reading your comment about Liam Neeson always playing the same role knew that you've only seen a few of his movies, like Taken, Taken 2, Unknown, The Grey, and a few others--and that you've never seen his magnum opus that is Schindler's List.

Edit: you'd probably be surprised to read this quote about Taken being a deviation from his normal characters:

quote:

Just look at the success of "Taken", for example. I thought it was going to be a straight-to-video release. That is actually one of the reasons I did it, to be honest. I felt like spending three months in Paris, I'd get to do all this physical stuff that no one would think of me for, and that the film would go straight to video. Then it became this big success. I was a tiny bit embarrassed by it, a tiny bit, but then people started sending me action scripts.

Explain how MM hasn't been MM in every single role?

How do you not even mention Open Range in the OP ?

Movie is awesome ... and Costner is awesome in it.

Also ... I am not a fan of comparing Tombstone and Wyatt Earp ... both are fine on their own merits.

I loved Open Range. Solid all around. Your statement just reiterates my point. Same deal with Nicholas Cage. The guy's got a niche, and thats what he does.

Thank you. They really don't compare.
