It wasn't a good movie, period. Boring storyline, forgettable villain, etc.
This. Actually forgettable is a generous term for the villain. The completely wasted and underused Idris Elba.
The fast and the furious guy stunk up the joint with this one. The whole thing felt like a bunch of puzzle pieces that didn't match.

Has the novelty of seeing other people play Kirk and Spock worn off?
It's the novelty of the tone and direction that has worn off. It's not Star Trek.
First one got a pass because new.
Second one got a pass, okay maybe that was luck we're thinking.
3rd time around, people realized it's always gonna be Saved By the Bell in space...pass.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
I actually liked the first two, but this one was as bad as the worst from the last iteration of Trek movies from the nonsensical villain to the deus ex machina ending.
Movie was horrible and I am shocked it was so well reviewed.
So he was pissed folks didn't come save his arse even though he was in an uncharted area of space without communications. How exactly did he go from his whole crew being dead to leader of the planet? That was as bad as the Nemesis plot of going from slave to ruler of Romulus.
Not sure anything in Trek history is as bad as all of the bad guy ships blowing up from music. That's a pretty big flaw in their technology.
I like the cast and the chemistry of the cast but this movie wasn't very good.

I didn't even know when it was coming out until I went and saw it with my gf's family the Saturday of opening release.
For one, they didn't put out the massive ad campaign that similar movies like Star Wars did.
For two, the ads they did pitch had two different trains of thought. It pitched it as both a "Just another day in Space" and a "This is the end of the Enterprise/Movie Trilogy" story, which is conflicting.

The second one was fine until the last 20 minutes, when it tried way to hard to look like Wrath of Khan. Although, I wish they had made Cumberbatch Khan's right hand man instead of Khan himself.

The lack of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Seriously.
I can't tell you how many people saw the second one not for Star Trek, but for Cumberbatch. They completely underestimated his appeal when the forecast the budget for number 3.

Star Trek is the television show equivalent of a member of my family. I'm going to bash the new shite until they make it Star Trek again.
Beyond IS star trek.
You'd not be disappointed.
Old ground, I know.

Voyager struggled because of the nature of the show - a sort of Anabasis-type story, which did not allow for a persistent villain character or even race of characters. Enterprise figured out too late - they should have run into the Xindi much earlier, then pivoted to the Kzinti as the main villain the rest of the time. They could have had side stories with Andorians, Vulcans and Tellarites - bringing them all together into a nice Origin of the Federation story. But, they tried the pure exploration thing first and struggled to find a real purpose for the show and metaphorically, for the ship until it was too late.
Voyager lost me after the pilot.
No command officer would have put her crew in the situation she did essentially marooning them.
And given that the two crews were combining (despite being at odds) to get home.
One might of thought there would have been plenty of conflict between them. Instead they were a nice happy federation family.
Voyager was garbage and killed the franchise.
(I won't even touch the lack of shipyard maintenance for that ship and yet it looked perfect week to week)

Not sure if the ad campaign was bad but the only thing that I remember from it was the ridiculous motorcycle jump. Needless to say, that didn't motivate me to watch the movie.

Haven't you bashed these movies enough in other threads?
I don't think so, they are awful.

Thanks. Some days, it seems like I'm the only guy out here fighting the fight. But, lately, I'm getting more and more support. Appreciate it, baw.

Just screams, "Star Trek" doesn't it?

When the first of the 3 came out several friends told me it was fantastic. And I was pretty much appalled the whole time. An annoying teenager as Kirk? An action movie parading as Star Trek? Maybe without the high expectations I wouldn't have hated it so much. There were certainly plenty of crappy Star Trek movies before the latest. Somehow these seem worse though, with the soul of Star Trek gutted from them.

Not only do I understand this, I could have written this post.

Well it never pretended to have a soul...only in name only.
It's just young adults in space and JJ Abrams is their John Hughes. Throw in crazy action, some Long Duck Dong, Planes, Trains and Spaceships, Smokey and the Bandit in the Milky Way...and 20-year old Emilio Estevez and you have Star Trek.
Starship Troopers had more gravitas than the Star Trek reboots.

Star Trek doesn't even need to have some complex, mind bending story...it just needs a passable one with a good villain. The new film made me cringe more than anything.
There were a few good things about it, but not many.

I can only speak for myself, but when I saw a trailer for Star Trek that had Beastie Boys music, a motorcycle jump, and Kirk stuffed into some new pretty boy outfit the entire thing just screams Hollywood frickery.
I want Star Trek to do well and succeed, but it seems that they are going for bigger and over the top rather than just telling good stories. I actually enjoyed the first two, but they had a few issues as well.

I guess I am in the minority but I loved it. Felt like they brought back old school with the way the characters related to each other.
I also liked the scene with the Beastie Boys. Thought the timing was great as you had no idea prior how they were going to take all those ships out.
