the film may have fallen into the trap of modernizing the franchise to the point where it's just another modern action movie.

It is tough to disagree with that.

Could be the ad campaign. I saw the promo maybe 2 or 3 times at most, and even then, I wasn't 100% sure if it was for a new Star Trek movie or a BluRay ad for the previous one....

And it happened in the abortion that was the first film. People wanted to like it. I get that. People liked it despite it's flaws. I get that.

But it was never "Star Trek" as that term has any significance.

As bad as TFF, Insurrection - and, to a lesser degree, Nemesis were - they were still Star Trek in spirit. They all built on the work of a series, but nothing stopped Abrams from doing that with 2009 - he just chose to not do that to be cool, "edgy" or "gritty" and to tell alternative "origin of" stories. It was a gimmick and they made some money off it.

But, it's still not "Star Trek" - can't be "Star Trek" to any rational, thinking fan of the series.

I'd love a slow paced, cerebral Star Trek film with this cast, or a lighthearted adventure like The Voyage Home. But I'm afraid that they're set on doing the average motorcycle chase and Mission Impossible narrow escape movies.

I have to be honest. I didn't really like this one. I know I should have, but the middle act was really boring.

I must confess, my favorite Star Trek movie is TMP. Followed by Kahn. Then First Contact.

TMP is everything that made the series so great. It's about exploration, and discovering a new life form. I know it's a rehash of a plot of the series, but that's what makes it great. The Enterprise can't go in guns blazing and beat every foe. The crew has to sort it out and save Earth. Kahn and First Contact are great because they are emotional. Both movies opened old wounds, and both Kirk and Picard are great in them.

I'd rather see a new Star Trek tv show than movies. With Netflix and Amazon, I can't believe why this hasn't been done. Hell I liked the first two seasons of Enterprise before UPN started meddling and turned it into a bad show, so much so that even the cast was vocal about it.

Star Trek is about exploration. Period. Roddenberry was so adamant about it that he intentionally didn't have the Enterprise really "fight" any bad guys in TMP to specifically differentiate it from Star Wars.

Coming in January, or so I've been told.

Is this the Internet series from CBS I've heard about?

It is going to be web only? I hadn't heard that.

What I like is that Bryan Fuller is involved. What I don't like is that Alex Kurtzman is involved.

ETA: I see now - it's going to be used to leverage Star Trek into CBS All Access subscriptions. This means I'll likely not watch it through official channels.

New show is online via CBS. Main character is supposed to be a female Lt. Commander and the overall show is supposed to be "darker".

And the current Kirk got bored with it after one film as Captain.

Probably not going to do it for me - but DS9 was relatively dark compared to the others (perhaps Enterprise excepted, Season 3 is pretty dark in spots) - and I enjoyed it more than many Trek fans.

Pretty poor ad campaign

I wasn't even aware it existed until it's second week in theaters.

Did they advertise at all?

I enjoyed DS9 and TNG. I grew up watching them. It was great that they were able to have two very solid shows set in the same time period that were so different from each other. You weren't watching TNG on a Space Station with DS9.

I wish they'd do a new show with Worf as a captain of his own ship.

I want to say that was under discussion when they were working up Voyager - they decided to go PC with Mulgrew (who was probably the weakest cast members of Voyager). That and Dorn was probably burned out from playing Worf on a weekly series for over a decade at that point. It's one thing to put on a costume and makeup. It's quite another to get into Klingon (or Ferengi - any other prosthetic heavy race) every damned day.

It really makes no sense.

It was, by far, the best of the reboots and one of the best Trek movies (definitely top tier).

What sucks is that this likely means that Lin won't be involved going forward, which means back to the lens flashes.

DS9...There were some freaky dark episodes of that show.

And the show had the best individual villain. Q was a fantastic character, but he was an anti-villain, at best.

Gul Dukat is one of the finest villains in science fiction film or television history. I would argue he is the most fully developed, 4-dimensional villain I've seen on television. Great villains facilitate great stories.

Voyager struggled because of the nature of the show - a sort of Anabasis-type story, which did not allow for a persistent villain character or even race of characters. Enterprise figured out too late - they should have run into the Xindi much earlier, then pivoted to the Kzinti as the main villain the rest of the time. They could have had side stories with Andorians, Vulcans and Tellarites - bringing them all together into a nice Origin of the Federation story. But, they tried the pure exploration thing first and struggled to find a real purpose for the show and metaphorically, for the ship until it was too late.

ETA: And they mucked up the canon for Klingons and Romulans so much, I just have to excuse it because I recognize the limitations they were under.

We saw it at our local theater yesterday and enjoyed it. It's been on here for several weeks and the theater was still pretty full. It was a wild ride as usual and the special effects were amazing. The plot was interesting but hard to follow at times. I will probably enjoy it more in HD on our home theater system. I have vertigo problems and the sound was so damn loud (even with earplugs) I was literally nauseated on the way home.
