More current might be Tom Hanks or Harrison Ford?
hanks was definitely that guy in the 90s, but not any more. maybe harrison ford was huge in the 80s, but definitely not now. Leo will probably be up there by the time its all said and done.

Honorable Mention: Marlon Brando
John Wayne? WTF?
ETA: and Jackie Gleason is clearly "The GREATEST"

I think that what makes a movie star is that the person is a cultural icon. I agree that Marilyn Monroe probably fits as one of the very biggest icons. John Wayne is also a good answer. Tom Hanks would be a more recent answer, but I think that he might nit have been as big as a symbol. Maybe Clint Eastwood fits up there.
To compare it to another industry, Elvis Presley could probably be argued to be the biggest cultural icon in American history. He was even in movies, so maybe in a slanted way he belongs in the above category too.

Top Box Office Stars by Year
Not sure how scientific that list is, but Bing Crosby and Burt Reynolds ruled for half a decade at a time.

No one said best actor. It said movie star and he has been huge for quite a while now.

Tom Cruise? Are you all serious? Over Marilyn Monroe and/or John Wayne?
Honestly, the OP needs to be way more descriptive in what he's looking for. Box office star versus cultural icons versus most talented. There's different answers for each.

Cruise is without a doubt up there...it's 2014 and he's still in box office blockbusters. shite when there's a preview out no one even calls it by its name, just that Tom Cruise movie that's coming out.

Cruise is definitely near the top. 4 decades and will make it 5 decades in 5.5 more years of putting out big hits with several iconic movies in 3 of the 4 decades so far.

John Wayne would have to be #1. Jimmy Stewart would be 2nd.

Tom Cruise is a fricking joke

Tom Cruise pretty much owned Hollywood from like 1986 - 2005
I can't think of another movie star who has had a longer stretch of dominance

The question definitely isn't asking who is the most talented actor of all time. Movie star doesn't have a specific definition or criteria. It's very subjective and everybody can have their own list of what defines someone as a movie star. For most its probably a mix of box office draw and being an icon.
