I wonder how much GoT modeled Tywin after the Braveheart version Longshanks.

Braveheart came out in 1995, Game of Thrones was published in 1996. Based on GRRM's writing pace, I think it's unlikely that the movie greatly influenced Tywin's character in the book.

Rhaegar and Lyanna running off together

Brandon's decision to ride to King's Landing, threatening to kill Rhaegar, and getting himself, the heir to the Vale, and his father killed started the rebellion.

The North, Riverlands, and Stormlands were all set to be united by marriage or promise of marriage. The Vale would stand with them because of Ned and Robert fostering there..

There could have been a resolution to the "abduction" without a war if Brandon hadn't been a hot headed moron. When Aryes killed Rickard and Brandon and demand the head of Ned and Robert there was no other choice but to call their banners and go to war.

Either way, whenever a Stark who is betrothed to someone runs off with someone else, bad things happen.

Longshanks is easily a top 100 military commander of all time and maybe a top 50.
We think of him through the lens of Braveheart.

His reign was a high point for England. He was brutal in foreign policy though, both with Wales and Scotland.
