Wheel of Time to be made into TV series

Well, there it is.
quote:
Harriet McDougal, wife of the late Robert Jordan, dropped some exciting news late Thursday: the TV rights to Jordan’s Wheel of Time fantasy epic have been acquired by a major studio.
In the wake of the success of Game of Thrones, and considering the staggering amount of fantasy and sci-fi book properties that have been optioned for TV and film, the absence of The Wheel of Time has been eyebrow-raising. (Or in the parlance of the series itself, perhaps the better term is “sniff producing”?) Fans of the series were given a glimpse into the legal tangle preventing WOT’s emergence onto the small screen on February 9, 2015, when a sudden pilot episode dubbed “Winter Dragon” aired in the early A.M. hours on the FXX Network. McDougal released a statement clarifying that the pilot was made without her knowledge, prompting Red Eagle Entertainment, the production company behind the pilot, to issue a lawsuit. (Which they later withdrew.) A more detailed account of the behind-the-scenes machinations can be found at io9, but regardless of the details, overall it seemed as if fans would have to wait a very long time to see Jordan’s work on screen in a large-scale production.
Now, the wait is seemingly over.

Announcement
The following is a press statement that has been approved by the studio involved in contract negotiations:
Update: Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time. Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio —Harriet

I just hope it's not SyFy or the CW

I don't know if I'm happy or sad about this.
I feel like so much more could go wrong than could go right.
But... if they nail it...

God I hope they nail it. I forget which network had the rights to it they had to make an episode by a x date sometime ago or they were going to lose the rights to the series. They put an episode that was the prologue from the first book. It was a 30 min episode of Billy Zane acting terribly. It was so bad they aired it on tv at like 3am.

Nothing against Billy Zane though... I'm sure his heart wasn't in it.

If it gets the same treatment as The Expanse, I would be totally ok with that.

or the CW
Agreed

So... What? 30 seasons pre-ordered by Netflix?

This or a Forgotten Realms series with Drizzt and Co.

Thank you I knew someone had the rights to it. It's fx

I hope they cut out LOTS of the middle section of books. There's so much Edgwene walking around bitching for like 3 books that the series almost lost me.

WoT is my first love, as it were. First fantasy I ever read really got into.
That being said, it is way way too long, and too squeaky clean by today's modern fantasy GoT standards.
It will be interesting to see how they do it, but they could really cut out about 7 books and about 1 million subplots.

there is no way to do this series properly it is heavily magic based. The cost of production would be too high

Series is the only way to go. Too damn long. Even as a series, half the cast would be on social security by the time it hits the end.
Doubt they finish the series but it will be interesting to see a tv adaptation.

It's cast will be twice the size of Game of Thrones. Around book 9 I couldn't keep who was who straight, outside of the main characters.

I still need to finish the damn series.
I keep getting stuck on book 11.
Where they were still adding new characters.
Hell, the bad guys kept getting brought back to life!
I'm finally reading GOT and when I am done, I guess I need to tackle 11-14 of Wheel.

Its pretty obvious that the series would be heavily modified for TV. Different formats and all, and while parts of the books are very cinematic, there is a ridiculous amount of filler.
Concentrate on Rand/Mat/Perrin/Moiraine/The White Tower.
Excise the bullshite subplots. Focus heavily on Rand's journey.
Could be done in 5-7 seasons easily if you're getting rid of Perrin looking for Faile for 5 books, Egwene/Nynaeve/Elayne going on shitty adventures and sniffing, Forsaken being constantly reborn again and again or whatever, etc.
