Gotta have "Casablanca" on this list. Easily one of the greatest and most essential World War II movies of all time. Also, "Letters from Iwo Jima" makes a nice companion piece to the more famous "Sands of Iwo Jima".

Do you consider "Sophie's Choice" a WW II movie? It deals with the aftermath and is a very difficult and complex perspective on the war's consequences.

Also, and I'm not trying to be edgy here, but what about "Triumph of Will"? It's unquestionably a great bit of film-making, and, as a propaganda film, it provides a sharper insight into the enemy than many "better" films from Hollywood.

I see most of the stuff missed has been caught and added..

"The Caine Mutiny" while a fictional story is still an oustanding look into naval life of the day, Herman Wouk simply crushes it.

I can still add two though.

Mosquito Squadron

Where Eagles Dare

The Cross of Iron

Perhaps the best war movie ever.

Dirty Dozen is unessential (the book is terrible)- for fun war movies, have to put Where Eagles Dare in there. 36 hours with James Garner (and Sgt Schultz!) is another non-intense, but enjoyable, WWII movie.

I'd include the Guns of Navaronne, if only as a nod to Alistair MacLean for his cool novels.

Mrs. Miniver hasn't been mentioned, but then it did focus on life in Great Britain during the war rather than the war.

I also liked Empire of the Sun. It is one of my favorite Spielberg movies.

And finally, The Summer of '42. Jennifer O'Neill sure got my 12 year-old mojo working.

If nobody has listed it, Fat Man and Little Boy. It's not sprawling or Oscar-worthy, but it's a pretty good (and sadly, the only one that I know of) depiction of what happened in Los Alamos.

meh

Newman isn't that great and the guy playing Oppenheimer (from the A Team?!?) is terrible. Best thing is probably the art direction.

The Beginning Or The End (1947) -- a very early version with considerable supervision from the Pentagon (the atomic process shown is intentionally inaccurate -- remember the real procedure was still top secret). There is a journalist who has written in detail about the film's production -- you can find some articles online.

Above And Beyond (1952) -- a glossy production from MGM (as was TBOTE) starring matinee idol Robert Taylor as Paul Tibbets. More a soap opera than war film, with lots of footage devoted to Mrs Tibbets suffering with the kids back home while hubby is preoccupied at work. It does show the Enola Gay bombing mission.

Oppenheimer (1979) -- BBC miniseries starring Sam Waterston. I haven't watched it in eons (it's on YT BTW), but being a BBC show you can bet it will be as much about Oppy being martyred for his politics by redneck American fascists as it will be about the Manhattan Project.

Enola Gay (1980) -- essentially a TV version of Above And Beyond, with TV names like Patrick Duffy (as Tibbets). Haven't seen it in ages but I remember it was okay.

Day One (1988) -- TV version of an excellent book (a good intro to the subject, for those interested), this is my favorite version of the story -- perhaps a bit dry, but thankfully free of soap. Unfortunately it's very hard to see -- there is an atrociously butchered version on YT, with half the footage cut.

Thanks, I'll hunt those down. I tried to qualify that it wasn't a classic, but they at least got inside baseball on the process and the tug of war between Oppenheimer & Groves.

*I spend hours on youtube watching old government films (us & them) on the atomic tests. I was hoping somebody knew some other actual movies.
