Great question, the reasons I wouldn't go with the Miracle on Ice are it wasn't the gold medal game and it was on delay from a game played in New York.

The event transcended sports.

The USA and USSR were still very much locked in the Cold War. The USSR was our mortal enemy at that time and the Olympics were still a massive event. The US would boycott the Summer Olympics later that year in Moscow. The USSR would do the same in the 84 Summer Olympics in LA.

The fact that it was the gold medal game didn’t really matter to anyone watching it. And the fact it was tape delayed was mitigated by the fact most people couldn’t find out the result before the broadcast anyway. There was no internet or 24 hour news. Hell, there weren’t even that many channels. It was pretty easy to avoid learning of the result if you wanted to, and even if you didn’t want to. Morale in the country wasn’t particularly high in early 1980. The massive upset gave Americans something to feel good about.

People who didn’t know much, if anything, about ice hockey watched that event.

Not a fan of the Patriots, but the 28-3 comeback and Falcons melt in Super Bowl LI is one of my favorites. I still laugh at the Falcons for that...

I assume 'greatest" is not the most watched. Because that is easy. It's the FIFA World Cup and there is nothing close.

world wide, probably right.
but if we talking just in the US, then there isn't a single World Cup game anywhere in the top 10.

Miracle on Ice was a huge deal. I remember everything being interrupted to cut to the game.

Unfortunately this Game of the Century proved meaningless.

My personal favorite would LSU routing Clempson, but if you get to count more than one game/match and an entire event as a whole, this is a great answer...

he 2008 Summer Olympics has to be up there.

China put on a spectacular show for the world. Of course they did a good job of ensuring that the world did not see the dirty laundry.

-Michael Phelps and his record
-Usain Bolt
-The US gymnastics team vs the Chinese team and the drama and questionable results
-MIsty Mae and Kerry Walsh
-Nastia Liukin

Just so many great stories and in my opinion the greatest Olympic Games of my lifetime

I'm still not a big winter Olympics fan but this got me hooked on the summer Olympics. So many good story lines that year.

Greg LeMond's comeback in the final stage to win the Tour de France by 8 seconds.

Jason Lezak's unbelievable relay leg to chase down Alain Bernard and preserve a gold medal for Phelps.

No way an ice hockey game can be considered the greatest event….its too niche of a sport.

That game wasn't just a hockey game.

Agree - I was just a kid but I still remember mom and dad letting me stay up to watch. This was America v Russia at the height of the cold war. It was way bigger than a sporting event to the country at that time.

Up there with miracle on ice would be
Borg Vs McEnroe 1980 Wimbledon Championships Final.
6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (18-16), 6-8
McEnroe saved seven championship points during the match, but lost in the 5th.
The best Tennis match I ever saw. Still remember watching it like it was yesterday. It gave me a love for the game that I still have over 40 years later.

I was thinking about that...but more likely a few years later with The Thrilla in Manila. 1975...the final match between Ali and Fraizer.

Some reports claim that the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila each had over 1 Billion viewers worldwide.

Do you believe in miracles?

Yes, the 1980 hockey game.

Runner-up: Borg beating McEnroe in a five set (with a tie breaker fourth set) match also in 1980.

Secretariat winning the Belmont. The most dominant sports feat in history. His record still stands.

For me personally, while watching it, was the home run chase between McGwire and Sosa.

As a 42 yr old with 3 kids and just not enough time as id like to watching sports anymore, I wish I could love current day sports as much as I loved watching the hr chase that year.

I stand by my assertion that the 2008 Olympics was the greatest in history.

for your consideration... The USA mens swim team rally's to keep Michael Phelps quest for history alive.

Secretariat is a great choice. I clearly temper watching and being amazed.
