Solid post. Sorry you have to endure this era. You wouldn't have made it through the era of the Westerns without some serious counseling and pharmaceutical help.

Spielberg produces the Transformers movies, he has no room to talk. Also westerns are far from extinct.

You do realize 95% of movies follow the same basic structure, Volger's Hero's Journey? So what's the appeal of any movie at this point since we already know the exact formula and basic outcome before we start?

Most of us go for entertainment and escapism, and superhero movies provide a nice respite from the real world. What do you more evolved people do for entertainment?

The fact that fans can't see the difference between superhero movies and other cinema genres in your statement - is exactly why Hollywood is making so much and exactly why OP is so pissed off.

It's not only mainstream - it's devoured everything else. The new world cinema.

Nobody cares that superhero movies follow the same script or modus operandi as other movies or Westerns - there's only 5 stories ever told - so who cares?

It's the product...the product, the film, the comic-book, the over-saturation - not the story - you're still going to see a comic-book movie...just like you can make Citizen Kane in a Western but you're still going to see a Western.

And there were too many - and they slowly died out until the 90's - and even now they're barely made.

Westerns and comic-book movies might have similar themes and story concepts like super-hero movies but at least Westerns aren't total comic-book make believe stuff that has never ever ever ever nor will ever ever ever happen in reality.

Westerns happened, IRL.

Comic-books only exist in coloring books on a page...there's zero connection to reality like Westerns.

this describes 99% of all movies.

You know that point A eventually leads to point B in 95% of movies.

Guy and girl end up together, Main character overcomes adversity and reaches goal, etc.

We watch anyway to see compelling characters and to see the storylines in the middle to get from inevitable point A to point B.

Superhero movies are fun. I understand that they might not be for everyone, and obviously not your cup of tea. But they usually have likeable characters, fun action, and some good humor mixed in. I think a lot of people also enjoy how the movies in the same universe intertwine with each other, and enjoy the different and unique villains.

It was fun to see these characters in live action 10-15 years ago because prior they always looked crappy. The Hulk, for example, was something they couldn't get right until recently. Now, it's old hat.

The technology improves so fast now, I was watching the Avengers the other day and the Hulk cgi stick out like a sore thumb. The incredible Hulk cgi didn't age well either.

Atleast they're entertaining and how has the chick flick movie survived? It's always the guy's fault no matter the scenario and he comes crawling back and she forgives him and they live happily ever after. Also look at a movie like Logan, that was hardly a "normal" superhero movie. I think you'll see more movies like it because some are becoming cliche.

The best ones have an entertaining blend of humor and colorful action and are suitable for families.

In the 80's and 90's we had Big Action movies. Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, etc. Even Keanu (Speed) and Nic Cage (The Rock, Con Air), etc.

We had James Bond, with an extended universe and fantasy layered over reality, since the 60's.

We've had Star Wars since the 70's.

In a lot of ways the comic book movies are just an extension. These are part action fantasy, part fairy tale, and Marvel has successfully blended in the extended universe and continuity.

And once, we used to go see Stallone and Schwarzenegger movies, to count the explosions and watch the body count climb. Movies like Cobra and Commando have extensive scenes where there really is no plot at all, just 15 minute-plus stretches of combined "boom" on film.
CGI is probably safer and easier to create, maybe cheaper, and it's getting pretty damn realistic.

It's all just entertainment.

As a fan of comics growing up, it's great to finally see Wonder Woman on the big screen, and I'm glad it was done well. And I'm happy it was a period piece, we don't need everything originating in the modern day... comic book heroes are basically immortal and ageless, as long as they keep selling.

Marvel really had the B list, but they've managed to craft a pretty interesting and involved story. You can binge the movies like you would a series. I'm a little curious how much legs it will have beyond Thanos, when the current group of characters will wrap up.

I think DC will make their run too, but it will seem hollow in comparison.

We don't know what the next big blockbuster wave will be, until it takes off.

I do realize 95% of movies follow this same basic premise, but it's just so blatantly obvious for super hero movies. Without reading anything about the new Spiderman movie I'm pretty sure the plot is he's gonna fight a supervillain, look like he's possibly gonna lose, then end up winning in the end. On the other hand, one of the board favorites, Game of Thrones, can you honestly tell me how the series is going to end? One of my all time favorites was the Sopranos. Week to week you never knew what was going to happen. Recently I've watched the Fargo tv show, Happy Valley, and broadchurch and at no point knew how the story would end up. Yes, you may have a general idea of what may happen, but the ending, as well as the path to get there, is largely unknown. I don't find this to be the case with superhero movies. Call me crazy.

You can say that about a lot of stuff because the good guys usually win.

GOT will end with humanity defeating the ice zombies and surviving.

There will be a big ice zombie attack, they will push south, it will look like humanity will have not hope - something will happen to turn the tide (dragons) humanity will push back and eventually claim victory - a couple main characters will die. Some nice wrap speeches will be made.

Its a fantasy epic - they all follow the same format.

Yeah. I got fricking tired of that trite formula around 3rd century BC. Like everyone had already read the epic about Hercules and then Jason and the Argonauts came along. It's like, get your shite together ancient Greeks, Romans, and Alexandrians, we are tired of the hero formula.

I'm very selective with the hero movies. Like Spider-Man, I'm not even going
Like others said, the same ole script over and over. Then reinsert a new actor and reboot the series again. Geez....
