My favorite is Prince of Darkness. I don't know anyone else who's seen it and no one ever mentions it in threads like this.

Saw this in the theater when I was in high school and thought it was awesome, scary as hell. Started to watch it again a couple years ago and didn't feel it held up.

I watched Ghosts of Mars not too long ago and thought,"how the hell is this a John Carpenter movie? Acting was comical

i rewatched it a few months ago and it was even worse than i remembered it. apparently it was supposed to be "Escape from Mars" with plissken but the studio pushed for Ice Cube and carpenter was already burnt out from directing.

I don't believe anyone has mentioned Cigarette Burns yet, which was one of his Masters Of Horror episodes.

That was probably one of his better efforts since the early 90s.

I love how John Carpenter got the biggest self-promotion for a director in movie history in all his films. What a sweet deal he made with studios.

It's not Warner Bros or Paramount or 20th Century Fox's movie...screw them.

It's "John Carpenter's blankity-blank." His name is part of the title of all his movies.

And then Tyler Perry copied him...but his work in the opposite effect.

"John Carpenter's -----" you'd get all excited seeing the movie poster. Oh man, this is gonna be so good.

"Tyler Perry's -----" you'd turn away from the movie poster. Oh man, what a pile of shite.

It's tough to have a run like his. He's maybe 1 of 15 or so directors with that kind of awesome and varied output.

The Thing will go down as my #1 horror movie of all time

Most definitely.

In the Mouth of Madness!! Sam Neill going insane! Lovecraftian monsters! I'd also say it was his last great film.

Such a great underrated movie.

Prince of Darkness is also awesome. So weird.

If anyone hasn't seen it, I enjoyed The Ward a lot. Not his best film, but it's a decent sendoff.

Had no idea this was a Carpenter film. The only movie I've ever watched that made me feel like it was a work from Lovecraft. Thought it would be more of a Stephen King type movie. A rare classic that is never on the cable networks. Just too weird I guess....

It's history's best Lovecraft film.

But have you not seen Reanimator? That's sort of close, specifically the sequel. Also Dagon is legit.

When I think of Lovecraft, I think of the Cthulhu Mythos. I have never seen (I know, shame on me) Re-animator, but I have heard/read enough about it that I assumed that it had no dealings with any ancient old ones...

I think I remember a Dagon movie, but it was pretty cheesy. Will have to check that bad boy out in the future.

Agreed. The Sequel gets more into a bit. The first one - certainly not.

Well....sadly yes.

I do wish someone would do a real mythos film, but good representations of that are left to video games and board games.

I remember a few years ago Del Toro was rumored, but I am not sure that he would even be a good choice. He may go so beyond the weird into "I don't know what the hell is going on" that it is not terrifying anymore.
Lovecraft should be horror first. Horror at glimpsing something beyond.
Carpenter did just that in Mouth of Madness.
Sam Neil did a damn good job as well. And I loved the casting of Jürgen Prochnow.
Now, earlier in the thread, someone mentioned Christine. That book terrified me as a kid. The movie...like a lot of King movies is just ehhh.....
But not sure what else Carpenter could have done with that story.

Little disappointed no one mentioned his early, early, tripped out space epic....DARK STAR>>>>

Watched Escape from New York the other night for first time in years. I forgot how good that movie was. Plus he had repeat actors most of his movies.
