He put out some of the best movies of the 80s then just seemed to disappear. What am I missing?

He has some awesome posters too

He made a bunch of shitty movies and now he just does music full time. He actually goes on tour and releases albums with his band. I think he's done with movies.

JC plays Escape From New York Theme - Live Studio

such a boss.

love Guillermo Del Toro's twitter rant about him

quote:

When I think of John Carpenter, I am amazed at the fact that we take him for granted. How can we? Why should we? He is lightning in a bottle

quote:

Assault on Precinct 13 by John Carpenter. Carpenter flexing his muscles, revamping the archetypes of a Western and establishing his own.

quote:

Halloween by John Carpenter. A genre supernova. Creates a taxonomic category that still lives. Unsparing precision, simplicity and elegance.

quote:

Sidebar: We must all agree that Carpenter is a brilliant writer / director. A rare breed. A true auteur. Oh, and a hallowed composer.

quote:

The Fog by John Carpenter. 1/2 One of my favorites. Highly original blend of bare bones folk tale horror and metaphor.

quote:

The Fog by John Carpenter. 2/2 The film works like JC's scores, by spare rhythmic punctuation. Its origin reveals a literary streak in JC

quote:

Carpenter's scores fluctuate w his films. Listen to them: they embody the spirit of each film perfectly. They are his final auteur voice.

quote:

@RealGDT Beyond him quoting Machen verbally, the film feels like Hope Hodgson, Machen, Hawthorne, Washington Irving, etc via B movie verve.

quote:

Second sidebar: John Carpenter doesn't give a frick whether we like his films or not.

quote:

John Carpenter is one tough motherfricker.

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter. 1/4 A game-changer (again) and one of the finest horror films ever made. It cannot be matched. Holy Grail.

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter. 2/4 Make up effects, score, cinematography, production design are all utter perfection. But so is the script.

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter. 3/4 the irony is that most reviewers at the time were entirely blind to the virtues of story and character.

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter. 4/4 The movie bombed and was panned both. And I believe it fragmented Carpenter's heart somewhat. frick them all

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter 5/4 Carpenter chose (like Scott in Alien) to define character and story through audio-visual coding and...

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter 6/4 ...their interactions. Viewers needed to pay attention to the way characters related and spoke. Structure...

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter 7/4 ...not neatly packaged into a pre-digested structure. The movie was fiber, not pablum. You had to chew...

quote:

The Thing by John Carpenter 8/4 ...but we were at the peak of pre-chewed regurgitation. We MUST atone for the errors of the past. Masterpiece

quote:

Anecdote 1/2: One night, over dinner, I told John Carpenter, how much all generations love The Thing. How amazing it was that it had...

quote:

Anecdote 2/2: ...over time, "found its audience" and was now revered. "What fricking good does that do to me" he said. We ordered dessert.

quote:

Final thought for the day: Carpenter creates masterpiece after masterpiece and they are often ignored. Now, go to bluray church and pray.

The Thing was a game changer, on so many levels.

But I can't think of John Carpenter without hearing "Bad to the Bone"...

Kinda a shame since he thrived in the mid-budget film that isn't made any more

Watched Christine for the first time a few months ago on tv. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it and I had forgotten that it was even made by him going in.

The man just really knew how to create an atmosphere for suspense/horror films in that late 70s/80s era.

I watched Ghosts of Mars not too long ago and thought,"how the hell is this a John Carpenter movie? Acting was comical.

Vampires, Big Trouble Little China, & Escape from New York are two of my favorites still.

I agree that he wasn't given his due credit.
JC was a master that was ahead of his time.
The Thing is one of those movies I think is close to a perfect movie.
When you have a monster movie that the main protagonist is not the monster but fear, isolation and paranoia, you have something special.

I was pretty pissed after seeing the new Thing and the weak attempt at a prequel. Not even Mary Elizabeth Winstead could save it.

Lots of great movies and The Thing is absolutely the best of whatevere genre it is but I've never understood the love for Big Trouble in Little China. That movie sucked.

The Thing will go down as my #1 horror movie of all time, but I'm a sucker for In the Mouth of Madness!! Sam Neill going insane! Lovecraftian monsters! I'd also say it was his last great film.
