They really aren't comparable. As others have said, Alien is a true horror film and Aliens is a shoot 'em up space western. Both are top-50 movies ever IMO.

I have two more movies to watch in the franchise. It's probably all downhill from here though

Alien 3 is an underrated movie. It's clearly inferior to the first two, but so is nearly every other movie ever made. In and of itself it's an above average sci-fi/horror flick with several really solid characters.

It's biggest flaw is probably that you don't care about most of the victims because they're all random criminals with 30 seconds of screen time. It's like 90 minutes into the movie before anyone of note gets killed by the Alien.

Alien, Predator, and Terminator all hold a special place of being perfect horror scifi films that their successors will never be able to match in my mind because of the originality.

You movie snobs are nuts. Alien was great. ALIENS was memorable and better to digest in every way possible.

Aliens is a very good action film but Alien is on another level.

Alien is a transcendent movie and an elite horror film.

Alien is much better than Aliens on many levels.

As said before in another post, Alien is the better movie, but Aliens has more replay value. It helps to be dialed in before watching Alien, where you can pretty much check your brain at the door for Aliens. Both are classics in their own right, 'tho.

Am I alone in thinking ALIEN is a vastly superior movie?

I'm sure you were being facetious but of course not. Alien nailed it in every respect and is in my personal top 10. Its hard to believe that the film is 38 years old. If the film made its debut in 2017 instead of 1979 It would still be amazing. Wouldn't change a thing!

Aliens was a good movie. Aside for the first 15 minutes though, it was in a completely different genre. It was creature overload after that. More in the same vein as Starship Troopers! But better.

You're not. There are still a few intelligent people left in the world.

IMO it's better than Aliens. I like Aliens. I like it a lot. But it's an action flick. A cheesy, formulaic action flick that's very well done. It doesn't even feel like it belongs in the series. It's like Diehard with xenomorphs, which ain't a bad thing.

A3 is much more in the vein of the original and extremely underrated.

I'm with you...Alien is a classic. We've seen movies like Aliens before...it's just a good action flick.

The horror of the first one is legendary. "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream".
