Am I alone in thinking ALIEN is a vastly superior movie? I won't say ALIENS was awful, but the marines were so over the top to the point of annoyance. They are also hilariously inept which may or may not have been intentional. There's no buildup to the aliens themselves this time around, and there's just no suspense/tension.

I preferred Avatar. Morally superior movie in everyway.

They're almost different genres. Alien is a great horror movie. Aliens is a great action movie.

I agree that Alien is superior, but I think if you polled this board Aliens would win out. Aliens is outstanding too though.

ALIENS is basically Avatar. Rather, Avatar is basically ALIENS, but my point being, Avatar is a pretty forgettable film outside of special effects.

You aren't alone, because I am right there with you. But we are definitely in the minority, as most seem to find Aliens not only superior, but vastly so.

Aliens is a really good movie, but nowhere near the original. The Marines angle was cool, but over the top in a lot of places. But that's how things were in the 80s, so I can dig that. The main reason is that Aliens is just such a different movie than the original (action as opposed to horror). So it depends on which genre you like better I think.

The 80s had a ton of great action films. ALIENS is pretty darn mediocre when placed up against those films.

Exactly, I love both films. But, Cameron had to change the angle when he made Aliens because it would have been impossible to match the horror feel of Alien.

Nope, I think Alien is the better film also. It's one of my favorites. I love Aliens also but it's a completely different type of movie. At the time I was so intrigued with the space jockey, I wanted to know more about him. That's been cleared up with Prometheus.

Lol, Aliens is one of those great actions flicks! One of the very best IMO...

Your thread is bad, your follow-up posts are bad, and you should feel bad. But you may have a partial out. Which version of Aliens did you see? If it was the extended cut where Hudson gives his "ultimate badass" speech, that movie was inferior to the theatrical release and the cut which just included the robot sentries.

They are different genres. Its kind of unfair to compare them. Aliens is more rewatchable due to the action and pacing but they are both great movies.

They're definitely different genres.

And Aliens was created with the audience in mind, knowing that we all had full knowledge of the aliens capabilities while everyone other than Ripley did not. That made the space marines' over-the-top bravado work for us.

Aliens isn't a bad movie. It just doesn't stand out to me in the way that a lot of 80s action films do. Alien is in a completely different genre, but despite being made in 1979, it has aged incredibly well from a story telling standpoint as well as a visual effects standpoint. When I saw it, I immediately understood why it's held in such high regard.
