Well I'd expect any Batman film to outgross any Ant-Man film

It's easy to say that now, but Batman was almost buried after the debacle of Batman & Robin. I remember when Batman Begins was being made, there was no buzz whatsoever for that film. General audiences just didn't care about him anymore. Fortunately the movie turned out to be quite good and it reinvigorated the franchise again.

Fox has said on/off that they want to do a shared universe, but contractually they might not be able to do so. They have two totally separate licensing contracts with their Marvel IPs..

Brian Singers already talking about doing an Xmen/FF4 crossover, how do you feel about that?

Like I said, Fox for the past 2 years has said this and then backtracked...I feel they are saying this now to try to pump up the F4 box office.

Eh, no. People were super excited for another Batman movie. Especially once Bale was attached he was just starting to blow up.

Batman is still one of the most recognizable IPs in the world and has been for the last 50 years, so yeah I stand by what I said.

We'll agree to disagree. I think it says something that Begins only made 300mil at the box office, yet both sequels ended up making over a billion.

Batman Begins opened on June 17, 2005 in the United States and Canada in 3,858 theaters,[3] including 55 IMAX theaters. The film ranked at the top in its opening weekend, accumulating $48 million, which was seen as "strong but unimpressive by today's instantaneous blockbuster standards".[51] The film's five-day gross was $72.9 million, beating Batman Forever (1995) as the franchise high. Batman Begins also broke the five-day opening record in the 55 IMAX theaters, grossing $3.16 million. Polled moviegoers rated the film with an A, and according to the studio's surveys, Batman Begins was considered the best of all the Batman films. The audience's demographic was 57 percent male and 54 percent people over the age of 25.[51]

The film held its top spot for another weekend, accumulating $28 million in a 43 percent drop from its first weekend.[75] Batman Begins went on to gross $205 million in North America and had a worldwide total of $373 million.[3] It is the fourth-highest grossing Batman film, as of August 2012, behind Tim Burton's Batman, which grossed $411 million worldwide and also being surpassed by its sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, both of which have grossed over $1 billion.[76] Batman Begins averaged $12,634 per theater in its opening weekend.[3] It was released in more theaters, but sold fewer tickets than the other previous Batman movies, with the exception of Batman & Robin.[77] Batman Begins was the eighth-highest grossing film of 2005 in the US.[78]

Despite the fact that some fans have argued that Ant-Man would be Marvel's first flop, they've very much been proved wrong over the past few weeks. This weekend, it earned an estimated $12.6 million, a figure which puts it at #3 behind new releases Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation and Vacation. It was thought that Minions (which has taken a big chunk out of its box office haul) would beat it, but Ant-Man has remained in front. Its current domestic total stands at $132.15 million.

Overseas it has earned $159.5 million, giving it a global total of $291.648 million. That means it's just a day or two away from $300 million, and seeing as it only cost $130 million to make, Marvel surely have to be considering giving the character a sequel. Ant-Man still hasn't opened in a number of key territories, including China and Japan.

LINK

its going to pass $300m worldwide this week and it still has several territories to go. I now think my $335m prediction may have been too low.

here are the remaining territories it has yet to open in

08/12 - Italy
08/20 - South Korea
08/27 - Austria
09/17 - Greece
09/18 - China
09/19 - Japan

Here are what each MCU has made in those territories (all numbers from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers)

Iron Man
Italy - $11,035,006
China - $15,274,332
Japan - $8,658,784
Greece - $1,799,601
Austria - $1,018,284
S Korea - $25,169,783

Iron Man 2
Italy - $9,979,666
China - $7,919,827
Japan - $12,831,962
Greece - $1,572,625
Austria - $1,357,508
S Korea - $27,095,727

Iron Man 3
Italy - $20,910,968
China - $121,200,000
Japan - $25,185,661
Greece - $2,049,858
Austria - $3,524,852
S Korea - $64,211,513

Captain America: The First Avenger
Italy - $8,601,080
China - N/A
Japan - $3,431,374
Greece - $767,589
Austria - $721,073
S Korea - $3,814,179

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Italy - $9,732,200
China - $115,620,000
Japan - $6,628,830
Greece - $1,051,962
Austria - $1,345,894
S Korea - $30,177,601

Thor
Italy - $10,900,780
China - N/A
Japan - $5,737,436
Greece - $1,852,788
Austria - $1,665,346
S Korea - $14,791,773

Thor: The Dark World
Italy - $11,176,894
China - $55,340,000
Japan - $6,017,520
Greece - $1,267,903
Austria - $2,561,728
S Korea - $21,114,584

The Avengers
Italy - $22,012,517
China - $86,300,000
Japan - $45,256,010
Greece - $2,599,996
Austria - $3,175,739
S Korea - $50,683,851

The Avengers: Age of Ultron
Italy - $18,120,047
China - $240,120,000
Japan - $21,112,231
Greece - $1,393,399
Austria - $2,368,526
S Korea - $80,507,763

The Incredible Hulk
Italy - $6,460,290
China - $8,929,638
Japan - $1,692,037
Greece - $833,969
Austria - $414,620
S Korea - $6,383,794

Guardians of the Galaxy
Italy - $7,011,889
China - $96,470,000
Japan - $9,504,440
Greece - $703,988
Austria - $2,531,070
S Korea - $10,013,310

Looking at those numbers and excluding CA:TFA b/c it didn't open in China it seems that the worst case scenario for the take in those remaining territories would be Incredible Hulk numbers of about $20-$22m.

The most recent MCU films seem to indicate a conservative estimate for Ant Man should be about $35m in China, about $15m combined in Italy, Japan, South Korea, and a bonus would be about $2m from Austria and Greece combined.

It's possible that it could push up to $400m worldwide though I'm going to revise my original guess to $360.

I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. It was the funniest of the MCU movies so far. They did a good job of establishing the villain (people actually died! at least one did and a cute lamb). And there were some good nods to the MCU that didn't feel as forced as I was expecting going in (because of the studio meddling).

I would guess this won't happen. Marvel's schedule is set until 2019, will people still care about Ant Man in 5+ years? I'm interested to see how they use him in other movies. We know he'll be in Civil War at least.

While marvels plate maybe full, they certainly changed plans when Spider-Man came back into the fold. Also Marvel could expand their studios and could put out three movies a year. Early summer, mid to late summer, and the holiday season would be the tent pole dates. As long as they have good stories to tell I wouldn't see burn out being a factor. They're really only competing With Warner Bros. going forward. Fox Marvel could fall apart at any time.

I've seen articles that depict this a blow for Marvel. The seemingly "cant do anything wrong" studio, finally did something wrong.

They compared the opening weekend with the likes of Thor and Captain America. Antman cam in roughly $7 million short of those two films.

I think they did pretty well. I'm not too fluent in comics, but I know who Captain America and Thor are, and I'm sure most of the public does too.
How many were well versed in the realm of Antman? I'm not.

Or am I off here?

I don't think anyone expected it to do Captain America or Thor numbers--

Antman's budget 4 years after Captain America, and even with requiring a director shift, was still 10 million less than Cap's.

It's not a failure but it'll definitely start making Marvel second guess about investing 100+ million dollars into some of these lesser known properties.

If Doctor Strange also doesn't do well, Marvel will have to seriously start rethinking their plans for Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and Inhumans

Of those Black Panther is the only one I can almost guarantee will be a hit-- and could have been a mega-hit with the right casting of the BP (say another Heimdal and make the Panther Elba and we're talking bigger than Thor numbers easily).

ANT-MAN Passes $400 Million Worldwide

quote:

Ant-Man suited up in Japan and Greece in the film’s last international bows before going to China on October 16. The Disney/Marvel pic, directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, snatched $4.14M for the frame, its 10th, with $3.2M from 11 overseas territories, pushing it past $400M global.

Japan was a solid start at No. 1 amongst Western movies with $1.7M. That outpaces both the openings of Captain America 2 and Thor 2. International box office is now $223.8M with $117.6M for a worldwide cume of $401.4M. The top markets are the UK ($25.3M), Korea ($18.9M) and Mexico ($15.1M).

LINK

It may now break as high as $450m worldwide now depending on how well it does in China.

if it can do $59m in China it will also have made more money worldwide than every X-Men film save for Days of Future Past.

It seems the predictions of Marvel's demise will have to wait for their next untested property.

welp

I know that since they have already announced a sequel its a little silly to bump this thread but for one final nail in the Ant-Man = failure coffin

quote:

ANT-MAN Has Third Biggest Marvel Opening Of All-Time In China

Following the news yesterday that Ant-Man opened 60% bigger in China during midnight screenings than Guardians of the Galaxy did last year, it has now been confirmed that the final Phase 2 movie had Marvel's third biggest opening day of all-time in the country. In fact, its only been beaten by Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and its $12.9 million haul signals good things to come for Ant-Man. The former went on to earn $120 million there, while the latter grossed $240 million. It's hard to say where Ant-Man is going to fall between those, but it only needs to reach around $90 million for it to hit $500 million worldwide. It's now easy to see why Marvel went ahead and gave Ant-Man and The Wasp the green light, eh?
