I think Wyatt Earp is a much better telling of the story, and Tombstone is the more popcorn flick version.

Tombstone is going to get the consensus vote here, but Wyatt Earp is a good film in its own right. I particularly like Quaid's take on Doc Holliday in Wyatt Earp - although I recognize that Kilmer's may be definitive (Doc and Earp are 2 of the most portrayed historical figures in cinema history, up there with Caesar, Lincoln, etc.)

I mean, on paper, Wyatt Earp's cast is - at least a little better. Certainly Lawrence Kasdan, on paper, is a more decorated director than Tombstones' Cosmatos. However, the final product in Tombstone delivered a slightly over-the-top product that is ulimately much more fun and rewatchable than Costner's Wyatt Earp.

Having said that, I've seen Wyatt Earp, maybe, 2 times. I've certainly seen Tombstone all the way through half a dozen times and picked it up from the middle many, many more times. So, there's that.

ETA: Tombstone is considered one of the greatest Westerns of all time. Wyatt Earp is not.

Most of this.

Tombstone is certainly more "Hollywoody" but Wyatt Earp made much more effort to stick to actual history.

I like both for what they are.

The scene in Wyatt Earp with the pool ball and the bad guy from the Karate Kid was epic.

It's hard for me to buy Kurt Russell as a badass and Val Kilmer's accent was horrible, but I will give the slightest of edges to Tombstone.

Open Range shits on both though.

Forever I thought Tombstone was awesome and Earp sucked, but now Tombstone seems 90s cliched or something and Earp looks less dated and better overall.

Tombstone was one of my favorite movies as a kid, but I haven't watched it in at least 20 years. I have a feeling that if i watched it now it would be a bit campy and cheesy.

Depends on what you're looking for.

Tombstone is a hollywood version of the OK Corral and events leading up to and following.

Wyatt Earp is more of a biopic about the man.

Both are great, but i prefer Wyatt Earp.

I'm surprised the Mastersons don't get as much recognition. They played important roles right alongside Earp

Is there a more cliche-filled movie than Tombstone? Don't get me wrong, I love the movie. But I cringe every time I watch it. Cue another tumbleweed rolling by as the scared mother runs to grab her child off the street before the gunfight...

Tombstone is a popcorn western as has been stated. But it works perfectly as that. It wasn't cast or written with history in mind, Val Kilmer as sickly Doc Holliday? Joanna Pacula as Big Nose Kate?

It's over the top, but it works.

I don't dislike Wyatt Earp, but it's mediocre as a bio pic and Kevin Costner can wear thin on me sometimes.
