In fact look at all those Oscar nominees from 97. Only The Full Monty would and should be considered lower than Titanic.

if the academy took all the best picture winning movies of the last 20 years and had a vote for the best out of those, titanic wins.

best picture isn't about the most original screen play, best acting, etc. its about production and achievement. same reason forest Gump won in 94. sure, the love story is a little cheesy, but its a fantastic movie. its an epic with a little of everything, and cameron knocked it out of the park.

Titanic is easily one of the best films of the 1990s and one of the biggest cinematic achievements of our generation. It is arguably the best directed film from that decade as Cameron poured his heart and soul into the project.

A "truly terrible movie" doesn't get nominated for 14 Academy Awards and win 11 of them.

It was a phenomenon because lonely women watched it 10 times. Same reason we had to endure twilight fans and sex and the city fans. It feeds some sort of special part of the brain powered by estrogen. It was not entertaining and it was a waste of special effects. If you got laid because you watched it, like half the posters that support the movie, it does not make it entertaining either. That makes sex entertaining. Cameron's obsession with the disaster makes him weird. I could not care less that he matched silverware patterns or room decorations to a boat on the bottom of the ocean. Twenty years ago I might have bought the argument that winning best picture would prove me wrong. Twenty years more of evidence says that argument does not hold water.

I am pretty sure I got laid one time watching Jumanji on TNT. I put forth that Jumanji is a better movie than titanic.

How is that any different from Star Wars? Lonely nerds living in their mother's basements, stepping out to watch those movies 10 times in the theater is a fair comparison, is it not?

Subjective.

I was 10 years old when I watched it in the theater so getting laid had nothing to do with me liking the film.

Winning Best Picture 20 years ago is a bigger accomplishment than it is now as the 1990s pumped out some high quality films that weren't just sequels and comic book movies.

At some common denominator of social phenomenon of people in general, you could compare star wars. I will hold it compares better to teenage girls lining up to watch twilight or girls getting together religiously to watch sex in the city.

It is subjective. You are entitled to your own opinion. There are going to be plenty of people that champion its artistry, cinematography, useless effects, and detail. That does not make the movie entertaining to me. I knew what was going to happen when I saw it, even the fake plot was predictable, except for the giant FU to all rational/non-emotional audience where the incredibly unlikable Rose throws the diamond in the ocean.

As for your age when you watched the film, I would put you in the other half of poster's defending it - those not basing their opinion of the movie on their sexual accomplishments during the movie.

If you think the academy has gone down hill in the last twenty years, then I think this might be the start of that trend.

The Titanic has been hated on as a silly love story chick flick since it came out.

Titanic, from an acting and script perspective, is a terrible movie.

If the movie was renamed Loveboat and there was no sinking ship at the end, it's a straight to DVD lifetime movie.

I think it is overrated, but Billy Zane had easily the best performance in that movie.

The last hour is pretty entertaining but it takes a lot of boring, cringeworthy dialogue to get there.
