The movie becomes even deeper if take into account that it is supposed to represent a story that the Puritans would tell (the whole title is "The Witch: A New England Folk Tale"). The Purtians believed that God had already decided who would go to heaven and who would go to hell, and there was nothing that you could do to change your eternal stance. They believed things like health, success, and wealth were signs that you were in God's favor, and lived their lives in spiritual paranoia looking for these signs in themselves and their families.

For the family in The Witch, it adds another level to their fear when things begin to unravel, and from a Puritan perspective, what happened to them is affirmation for why they were asked to leave the colony. They were damned. They devoted everything they had to serving God, but all of their prayers went unanswered. They were as alone spiritually as they were physically in the wilderness.

That leaves the baby Samuel. Why would a baby be put to death because of sin? Simple, he was born with original sin and Baptism washes away original sin.

Probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Very slow. Weird ending.

Caleb's sin was lust. The father's pride undid them all. I also like how he was ultimately crushed by all the wood he had chopped to "escape his demons." Just an extremely well made movie.

just got out. very well-done. great acting and cinematography. that being said....the filmmakers made a critical error

SPOILERS

they should not have shown the witch so early. they should've let the audience mull back and forth as to whether or not there was indeed a witch. maybe show her in the stable to make it clear that Thomassin didn't kill the kids/goats, but absolutely 100% cut the bit showing Caleb at the hut. really hurts it for me.

the sequence where Thomassin reaches out to Black Phillip was chilling. when you see the figure and the gloved hand reach out to her shoulder, that whole sequence was just well-done

SPOILER

I like that it showed the Witch so early. It let you know that it really was a witch doing all the creepy things like taking the baby. Made it that much more creepy to me.

Also as someone said earlier. one of the most f'd up scenes was the witch cutting the baby up. This happening in the first 20 minutes really set the tone.

I just got out, I loved it. Movies like this creep me out way more than jump scare type stuff.

it took out a key element that was sorely missed. knowing that there's a witch out there really diluted the family's descent into madness

For me, what you're describing has been done to death. Is there a witch, is there not? Is it all in their head? We've seen that in horror movies countless times. We just saw that in The Babadook. Showing the witch early gave us a pretty disturbing scene and let us know right away that the threat is very real. I enjoyed seeing a different take.

That scene with the baby hasn't. If they don't show the witch early, you have do to that in a flashback. I think the movie works either way, but worked better the way it was done. Plus, they never really show the witch until the end. We're left guessing how big of a threat she really is. Only to learn, it's way worse than we could have imagined. There was a slow progression learning more and more every scene. I thought is was done perfectly.

ETA: I mean, that scene with the baby, I was wondering what the frick I was watching right off the bat. In a good way. Had it been your way, I'd feel like I was watching something very familiar.

dont even need a flashback. have the scene in the stable and have someone find the baby's clothes clumped together with the pestle and mortar that the witch used to mash it up. have bits of residue and blood stains inside. that's all you need. just a rearranging of scenes

this is pointless to argue, but it hurts it for me. agree to disagree.

I'm Catholic so this movie hit a little harder than the average movie-goer. Had the same type of feeling when I first watched The Exorcist

Most Disturbing parts:

The baby sacrifice

Throwing up the apple

The raven pecking at the mom's teet (WTF??)

Any scene with Black Phillip in it

Final shot of the flying witch that looked (IMO) like the same position as the crucifixion

This movie had my jaw dropped for the last 15-20 minutes. Great film. I'll probably watch it one more time adn that's it
