Yeah, I didn't really care for Saw or Hostel or any of those excessive gore shock films; they were just too over the top. I really haven't been scared by any movies (with the exception of Poltergeist when I was a kid) but I have seen some that leave me with a sick feeling in my stomach. I'm more interested in a strong story/plot. My favorite horror film of all-time is probably Spellbinder.

The absolute worst though was Paranormal Activity. What a waste of time that was. From the Big Bird/Barney looking footprints to that crazy chick standing next to the bed just staring at the guy for hours, it was just laughable. Now THAT was an overhyped movie.

Finally saw The Witch today and I'm still trying to soak it all in.

Like many have said, it wasn't a horror movie in the common sense. It was a film that shook me to my core though. I just had never thought about that shite being truly real and I had major goosebumps throughout.

Girlfriend hated it though. She also isn't into non-mainstream films though.

Spoilers:

I'm still confused about what happened when it showed the witch the first time with Samuel. Did she cut his arse up or what? Can someone explain that to me?

Also, when Black Phillip talked at the end that may go down as one of the more disturbing moments in film for me. Just really got to me for some reason. The two siblings who had made a deal with him were also super creepy. They seemed disturbed by nothing that was going on and I figured something was off about them from the start, but couldn't pinpoint it until later.

Spoiler:

Yes, the script confirms the baby was cut up and turned into greasewhich we see applying to herself. In witch folklore, that can make you fly as you see the witch doing.

SPOILER ALERT

It was disturbing from the very beginning when we actually see someone hold a knife to a baby's body. You just don't see things like this in movies because it would likely create a shitstorm.

I thought it was excellent and as many have said, it's not a horror but more suspense/thriller. The music and cinematography was perfect and it really gives the viewer an idea of what it's like to be all alone in the wilderness with a dark presence forming around you, slowly ripping your small family apart.

I'd give it a very strong 8/10.

However, it was one of the most genuinely unsettling and emotionally disturbing movies I've ever watched. It really sticks with you and it's all you think about for a couple of days.

I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again. It's absolutely not a movie kids or the really religious/spiritual should see, because I can see this really bothering them. One of the reviews in the trailer says it best I think, the whole time you feel like you are watching something that you shouldn't be watching.

It is incredibly, incredibly dark

This. Just got out.

Probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Very slow. Weird ending.

Yeah I don't know how I felt about it. Didn't help there was the 300lb mexican with his flat bill, Bluetooth, and sunglasses sitting next to us that went through 3 refills of popcorn. His one and a half hours of smacking really fricked with my experience. Made it difficult to understand what everyone in the movie was saying with their dialect.

I'm going to have to watch it again, but it really dragged until the last 10 mins or so. Just seemed like the payoff wasn't worth the build up as I left. Felt like I had been blue balled by the pacing.

Spoilers:

Start off feeling great with the opening. Quickly see the witch in action...quickly. Then a miserable hour of incoherent dialog due to what I previously stated. All I gather is that baby is dead. Game of Thrones mom is mad she can't breast feed it until it is twenty. Incestuous brother bad luck Brian finally gets laid by witch and dies because of it. I'm thinking the twins are just acting out their version of The Crucible and some how manage to be more annoying than Winona Ryder. I still don't know what happened to them in the shed, but I hope it was painful. Then out of nowhere, daddy amazing voice gets gutted and I'm thinking finally shite is about to go down. 1min later momma goes down. 1min later girl is getting violated by Ba Ba black sheep. I'm intrigued and slightly aroused. 1min later finished.

But in all seriousness. 300lb Pitbull wanna be ruined any shot of me enjoying it. I had vital questions that didn't get answered until the gf explained them to me on the way home. I most certainly will give it another shot.

It was a very well crafted "serious" movie. Nothing like a traditional horror movie.

Incredible re-creation of time and place. Very tense and, yes, disturbing.

SPOILERS I guess

Poor father. How fricked was he?

I'm going to assume Thomassin is/was of age. I'd kind of like to date her as a witch.

I want to see this....it's a 65 minute drive (one way) from where I'm working the next 2 weeks. I hate driving.

Is it a movie that should be seen on the big screen or is it alright to wait for Blu-Ray/DVD/Streaming/ETC?

When Black Phillip fonally spoke to Thomason, oh man, the feels went crazy. They had a perfect build up to that. Then when you see the figure behind her, just haunting.

The apple that the son coughed up before dying. Did anyone think that it could have represented a couple of different things?
1) The lies that were told about the apples.
2) The Biblical forbidden fruit, allowing sin into the world.

Some in the thread have viewed the father as a sympathetic figure. I see it the other way around. His sins lead to just about every bad thing that happens to the family.

Nobody's mentioned the raven pecking Mom's nipple. Now that was disturbing.

What happened to the twins?

I've been pondering that as well. What is interesting is that when Thomasin wakes up from her father staring it her, there are two dead goats on the ground with her. Granted there were also two goats+Black Philip, but it was an interesting nod to other possibilities.

Knowing a witch entered the barn, it's easy to say they were probably taken and sacrificed/killed, since the entire play was to get Thomasin in the first place. Black Philip had the children, he could have left, the real target was Thomasin. He had to destroy her entire world to do that.

That's what I assumed.

The witch that Caleb found in the woods, was that the same one that came into the barn, just a spell to make her look somewhat not ugly AF? Or was that a totally different witch?

I think, based on the final scene, that it all could've been the same one, or it could have been a different one each instance.

You're the guy who posts a one-star review on Tripadvisor for a hotel that overwhelmingly has five and four stars. Can't you at least muster three stars?

Yeah I think it's the same witch. Remember when Caleb approached her and she was nice looking? As soon as she kissed him, we quickly saw an old, distorted looking arm grab him behind the head.

I agree Thomasin was the target of Black Philip all along.

Now for a little conjecture. Thomasin was the purest soul of the family and that made her the target. The rest of the family were mired in sin and the wages of is death. One of the father's sin was Pride. He even confesses this. The mother's Vanity (her father's silver cup), Caleb's was lust (incestous lust at that), and the twins slothfulness and frivolity. That leaves the baby Samuel. Why would a baby be put to death because of sin? Simple, he was born with original sin and Baptism washes away original sin. Remember that Caleb was frantic about Samuel going to hell because he never received the sacrament of Baptism.

If anyone has any other thoughts I would be interested in hearing them Like I said it's all conjecture on my part.

On a side note. I thought the actress that played Thomasin was 13 to 15 years old. She is actually 19. This was a career launching film for her.
