It's becoming so gratuitous lately. Is there some sort of quota?

Most serve no purpose to the plot. They simply act as a prop for the developed characters to react to, or it's added as an afterthought to a character, but the detail serves no real purpose other than having a gay character.

Gay characters can certainly be done right. I thought the Office did a good job with Oscar's character, and it played into some funny episodes.

However, these one dimensional gay characters need to die off. It's patronizing and pointless, like people haven't known a gay person before.

Come on son.

Agreed. Can we get rid of all the token black and asian characters as well?

Such as?

One thing I can think that bothers me is HBO going so overboard with Renly and Loras Tyrell's relationship in the show. As well as the Viper's sometimes preference for boys. Something that was barely hinted at in the books was overdone in the show.

I don't care if it's a token gay character or not I guess. I mean, if a character is a great character what does it matter if they are gay, straight, black, female, fat, old, etc.?

I don't watch nearly as much scripted TV as you I guess. I could see how it would be annoying if every new show seemed to have a gay person just because.

So that is the only thing where the show writers took some liberties? HBO is pretty good at going over the top with sex and violence. It's why people pay for premium cable.

Me neither, but a lot of the times that's not the case, or if they are a quality character, it doesn't really interact with the plot in a natural way. It takes me out of the show.

It's not anything new

Patton Oswalt did a bit on one of his albums where he talks about some movie wanting him to play the part of the gay best friend
quote:

I got offered to go audition for a romantic comedy and they wanted me to audition for the part of the ‘gay best friend!’ It’s 2011—I may as well put on blackface and tap dance. That’s how old that cliché is now. I read the script and every scene was like, I walk in and she’s crying and I go, ‘Microwave popcorn and red wine, stat!'”

Oswalt goes on to explain how he would have played the character as a dumb guy who doesn’t have any solutions to the rom-com heroine’s problems to counter this cliché character. It’s nice to see Oswalt show some integrity by turning down a stereotypical and outdated part like this. It’s his aversion to hacky comedy like this that has largely defined his career, causing him to be cast in intriguing roles that aren’t just examples of Hollywood regurgitating tired stock characters.

Might as well fill in the blank at this point. Agendas are all the rage these days, and they force them into television, movies and comics now. Gay is the main agenda, so we are being force fed this crap.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with characters being gay, woman, asian, black, mexican or any other "minority;" my problem is with the forced nature of it that ruins characters.

A character needs to feel organic in its development. This shite does not.

Best example of this is Barbara Gordon (or whatever her maiden name is) in Gotham. She is an ex-lesbian amphetamine addicted clubbing party girl. Seriously, can they force her into anymore stereotypes? If I were a lesbian, I would be pissed at the insult which is this character. (I stopped watching this show about 3 episodes prior to Season 1's finale... I found it terrible overall)

Yeah, it's hysterical and actually plays into his character. He made it this far being black and gay. It's also very humorous that the "straight man" comedically speaking is actually not straight.

Trigger alert.

It's gotten so bad even the otherwise harmless reality shows have gay "guests" that can't just be gay, their sexuality has to be portrayed as an aspect of their involvement. Recent examples are Naked and Afraid and Hotel Impossible.

I'm sure one could come up some bs reason to defend the issue but it really adds nothing to the shows other than checking off the box.

I'm going to take a guess and say it was the role taken by Kevin Smith in Catch and Release.

So true. Great dose of honesty there.

Best gay character ever and I don't even love the show like that but his interactions with those goofy arse cops is the best part of it
