There were a couple of episodes where he kept bringing up his male fiance. Then there was a scene where he was hospitalized and they did a quick message with the whole, "You can't see him, family only." / "But I'm his husband." thing.

Although I like a lot of badass woman characters, I don't see the point of sending the message that women are as badass as men. They just aren't.
Normalizing gays makes sense. Hollywood is like 80% gay. At least they don't try to get their pedo fetishes normalized onscreen - yet.

But Rey is a chick, so that's just some SJW agenda pushing meme by Disney, right? Let's ignore that she's very likely a Skywalker and exhibits the exact same Force prowess as her father and grandfather.

He was known as a great pilot way before by flying a T-16 Skyhopper and mentions how it is very similar to the X-wing. Natural force ability manifests itself in great reactions and awareness.

3 years between A New Hope and Empire, he knew a lot more about the force than Rey. She starts pulling jedi mind tricks out (jedi master ability) and the first time she touches a lightsaber she can keep up with a fully trained sith. That fight should have been over in 2.6 seconds and Finn and Rey should both be dead. Luke had exponentially more knowledge of the force when he first fought vader, and vader was pulling his "punches" so to speak because he did not want to kill luke. Ren had no connection to Rey or Finn and they should have been dispatched immediately.

It most certainly is. Make strong, young female characters and you can pull in a whole new segment of the market to your movies. It has been displayed many times: if you can market to 8-16 yr old girls, you win.

Neither of which could hold their own in a lightsaber fight with a sith 2-3 days after finding out the force was a thing. Even in the fantastical, suspended disbelief universe that is Star Wars, her abilities made no sense what so ever, Except for the ability with the staff, which was largely forgotten about 25% of the way into the movie.
ETA: Anakin was years into his training and Duku cut his arm off in a saber fight. Luke was years into exploring the force and Vader cut his hand off. Rey was a few days removed from finding out the force existed and was giving a Sith the business in a saber fight. Makes no sense
