The problems you see with this season of American Horror Story *spoilers*

1. Rampant Ryan Murphy Nip Slips
This is the name I've given when Ryan Murphy randomly, and without cause, inserts his personal beliefs into the plot/script that make so sense with either the story, character or both. This was present from the beginning, but it's been worse in season 3.
Examples: I know I've harped on this particular one before, but it's too inexcusably dumb to leave out. Fiona is probably the most wicked woman on the planet. She cares for no one, will kill you if it suits her. She cares nothing for the law, or law enforcement, and is seen using mind control powers to get her girls out of trouble with the police.
Why then would she a) vote for Obama twice (vote at all for that matter) and b) hate racist more than anything? At best, I think she'd be completely indifferent.
In last nights episode, when the Axe Man is attempting to attack the coven, Misty, the caring witch that brought Kyle back from the dead and tended to his needs, feels the need to tell Kyle as he's trying to help "We really don't need a man to protect us." Come on son!
2. The stakes have never been lower.
They introduced bringing people back from the dead WAY too early, and as a result, characters dying has no impact on the audience whatsoever. I likened it to the one Mission Impossible movie where they kept ripping off the prosthetic masks every 15 minutes. The movie became joyless drudgery.
Now I don't care who lives or dies, or if they'll stay dead.
3. I am Jack's complete lack of subtlety
A horror series mixing in the supernatural is bound to be a bit over the top, but this season is so heavy handed and ridiculous. Angela Basset's character is a complete caricature. I suppose she's what a person from Maine imagines what people from New Orleans are like.
The most heavy handed part of this season for me was when the witch hunter shot up the voodoo ladies hair place while we listened to an old negro spiritual, mixed in with cuts of Delphine crying while trying to not look at clips of blacks being sprayed with firehoses and being attacked by police dogs.
Slavery was baaaaaad. Racism is baaaaaaaad. Nah.

What made season 1 so good was that the main characters were normal people that we could relate to....we could feel the terror they were going through.
Season 2 and 3 sort of focused on main characters that were the source of the evil rather than the righteous dealing with the evil.
ETA: Watching a ghost story from the perspective of the ghost isnt scary

i agree with your first point.
We get it Ryan. You're gay. that's fine by me, we don't give a shite.

Exactly.
Hollywood, and militant homos like Murphy especially, think that America is burning homos at the stake with pitchforks and shite.
Really. I don't think their lifestyle is right, but I couldn't give a shite less about what they do to each other.

Bad writing since season 1.

Those were two big reasons I gave up on the show a couple weeks ago.
Well, those coupled with the fact that it may have been the single worst case of television acting I had ever seen. There wasn't one person on the show that was good...not one. Kathy Bates was awesome at first, but then started sucking. Angela Bassett was atrocious from the beginning. Precious is fricking horrible. Even Jessica Lange was terrible to me, although eveery now and then she would be okay I guess. Cordelia's husband was bad. Etc. Everybody on the show was just bad IMO, and it seriously took away from my attempted enjoyment of the show.
It sucks too, because there is so much potential with the whole "New Orleans/Voodo" angles.

(A) didn't she say b/c she thought human leadership needed a different perspective or something along those lines?
(B) maybe b/c since she is a witch she knows what it is like to discriminated against over something she was born as?
just b/c she can be a cold manipulative bitch doesn't mean she gives not one frick about anything.

bringing characters back way to early really hindered any sense of surprise or the "oh shite" moment. They talk up this big supreme story but nothing really happens with it until the season finale?
Fiona is the "baddest" of them all and super powerful. yet shes simply taken down by the axe man, who is dealt with in one minute? what a let down that is.
the season just really lost its direction after the break. the characters all changed their motivations irrationally and nothing came close to a story.

100% spot-on assessment.
I'm convinced the show is only going to have 1-2 more seasons. Book it.

I think most of us would argue that the direction was lost by episode 2.

4. The witches might as well be X-men or Jedis.
5. There is no conspiracy with terrified ordinary people in the middle.
6. At least in this last episode, we got some measure of supernatural evil, but it should have been there from the beginning.
7. The "Supreme" concept is as boring as it is gay. FFS, what does it mean to lead a coven that doesn't do anything.

Those are better than my points.

Nah, they just added to some excellent observations. You are totally right about Fiona, and I had never thought about that.
Posted on 1/23/14 at 3:15 pm to CocomoLSU
I'm with Cocomo on that points two and three are the big problems. Especially #2. There are no stakes, as anyone can be brought back.
Your first point couldn't matter less. Who is really going to argue the counterpoint that racism is a positive? So Fiona is anti-racism... So what? It is a meaningless point as no person is going to self-identify as pro-racism. To take two other shows... Glee couldn't be more pro-gay. It also sucks. Six Feet Under is just as pro-gay as Glee, but it is a great show... because it is a great show. If you're turned off by the politics, it says more about you than the show. A show ultimately stands on its own quality.
The other major problem with the show that hasn't been mentioned is that there are no rules. The characters can do anything that's convenient to them at any time and seem to generate powers as it is necessary to the plot. This is tied into the low stakes, but the fact there are no rules in regards to people's powers is just as bad. When anyone can do anything, but only until they need to do it, there is no dramatic tension.

the biggest example being cordelia and her sight. it was extremely upsetting that she gains this "sight" then apparently loses it and when she tries to get it back, it seemily doesnt work. that built some sort of drama. but alas, in the next 5 minutes we learn she can do it whenever she needs to. very boring writing.
Posted on 1/23/14 at 3:55 pm to Baloo
It's not about the politics itself. It's that he inserts so unorganically, and needlessly so. It doesn't do anything in character development or forward the story. It's analogous to Springsteen saying "buy local" mid song.
Posted on 1/23/14 at 6:05 pm to BlacknGold
Oh yeah. How did I forget about that? I lost my sight, now I have new sight, but I got my old sight back, now I lost my new one, frick this I'm going back, still don't have it, wait, just kidding, wtf?

Angela Bassett.
Cordelia's Botox od (last season too).
The ridiculousness if this season really makes me miss nip tuck. They even fed someone to gators.
