Wow. That was really good.

I did not expect that.

Why would you not expect it to be good when it's gotten really good reviews and a couple Oscar noms?

I didn't love it, thought it was pretty good. But it's not like this movie wasn't critically acclaimed

Really had no interest in seeing it in the theater.

Caught it on HBO and really enjoyed it.

It was good, but so not rewatchable. Matt Damon's constant jokey dialogue bothers the frick out of me when watching it again.

It was good, but the book is so much better. When a guy is stranded alone on Mars it helps to be able to know what's on his mind. The book was able to do this and it made it much more entertaining.

And everybody else's, too. There were really well done parts, but between three disco montages, too-cool jokes and too-cute astronauts it was a NASA commercial when it could've been a Castaway.

And wtf every three scenes chomping food talking about food preservation.

That pretty much sums it up.

And Kristen Weeg's character was totally pointless.

Agreed, but I think the movie did as good of a job as possible in converting the source material into a movie. Much like the Harry Potter movies, some good stuff just needs to be left out so that its not 4 hours long.

It was a great movie. I loved the book and thought it would be extremely difficult to make a good adaptation. But I was surprised how great of a job they did.

The most difficult task IMHO was to keep the dry sarcastic humor of Whatney. They did an admirable job but that was one difference. Now, I listened to the audiobook but I cracked up at many points. Had to pause it on a few occasions because I was laughing so hard I couldn't continue listening.

The book was written by a nerd. Of course it's going to have nerd jokes throughout the whole thing. I laughed out loud a lot when reading the book. I loved the book. I liked the movie for the most part. I didn't like them leaving out the rover trip and adding the ironman thing.

Everyone I see her, I think ab her Anchorman 2 character. It is unfortunate bc I'll never be able to take her seriously in any semi dramatic movie.

And the broken communication for the trip. It kind of ruined his whole pirate joke because if his comms weren't broken, he was told to go there and take the ship .

The iron man joke was actually in the book.

But yes, the montage of the rover trip that seemed to imply his biggest hurdle was boredom waiting for the cells to recharge was AWFUL.

It was a pretty good movie. A sci-fi take on Castaway. Damon did a great job and the movie looked great.

Way better than Gravity.

Yep. Which was funny, given The Martian featured 2 of Marvel's actors who are in the MCU with Iron Man.

Even stranger the Council of Elrond joke was also in the book which I read after having seen the movie. At first, I assumed that was thrown in there as a nod to Sean Bean, who was of course AT the Council of Elrond in LOTR Fellowship, but no...it was in the book and Bean must have been cast and it just so happened that joke was in there.

And everyone is right...they did a great job translating the book, Only thing I wish they'd have done was to tack on maybe an addition 20 minutes or so to flesh out his trip to the crater where he had lost total communication with Earth AND ran into the sandstorm AND flipped the rover prior to getting to the MAV. Didn't quite get just how desperate the situation was once he was on his way to the MAV...just like a casual road trip in the movie.

The joke was, but not the actual event.
