I think he absolutely has a fear of failure because of what happened with his own daughter. Fear, and PTSD as a result (which he definitely has), can compound that response. He couldn't save his daughter. He couldn't save Tess. He has a very real fear of protecting the people he cares about. It makes a lot of sense in that context.

Your interpretation is off. It's because he was showing those signs that he became ok with passing Ellie off to Tommy. If she was only cargo to him, passing her off would be the last thing he'd do.

I think episode 3 was great as a single episode of television, but I can agree that right now I don’t yet see what larger point it serves in the overall story. While I disagree with many who say it didn’t push the plot forward at all, I do think there could have been other methods to push the plot forward in the same/similar way. All that said though, I still think it was an excellent episode, with great acting and solid writing.

It seems like a small thing, but it is emblematic of the world that they live in. At some point, probably after the outbreak, that drawer broke. Even in the most-civilized settlement that we have seen, it was not pristine.
They could not go buy another dresser, and didn’t have the milling equipment and other resources to replace the drawer, so now there is a chest of drawers in that bedroom, just missing a drawer.
Attention to detail.

How I see it too, even with Tess..when she was about to end it and was saying to him things like "you never felt the way I wanted", etc. Was him not allowing himself to care about someone else on THAT level. Cause he did care about her, and also understood the world he was in and what he lost to get there.

I had high hopes but this series is flat out boring. They made Joel overly emotional and weak. The harrowing infected encounters in tunnels, buildings, university are completely removed in favor of pointless conversations and interactions. Episodes are mostly filler. It's a version of LoU with its nuts cut off. I'm out.

Druckmann is a frickin bum. The Chernobyl guys are the only reason the show is watchable.

I’ve held on so far but I’m done. That last episode was so bad it’s mind blowing. Btw where can I hunt some rabbits that’ll have me weighing 400lbs like the couple they met? Those two must be deep frying 10lbs of rabbit a day.

Having a baby in your late 40s in a last of us scenario might be dumber than executing a doctor or choosing a 2WD S10 as your doomsday prepper vehicle

We could only be so lucky if the ones that say they’re done or hate this show were actually done.
I have no desire to watch them walk around and do nothing but kill fungus monsters for a couple of straight episodes. If I wanted that kind of filler, I’d just play the game. This is a TV show.

This is a TV show.
It seems many of the naysayers are familiar with the game and not sure the two will ever coexistent just like Game of Thrones books readers versus the show watchers.

Yeah I think I need to rethink my view of the show as each episode being completely linear and thinking of each episode more as a collective to a broader story.
