Just rented and watched this. Thought it was fairly well done. Obviously some things were quite different from the novel. Some good. Like the barrels not being sealed tight so we could see the dwarves faces. And some bad. Like the addition of non-Tolkien characters like Tauriel.

Smaug, however, was really awesome to see on screen. They done a fantastic job with that.

As a movie alone I really enjoyed it. Overall I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I didn't mind the addition of Tauriel, but the utterly unnecessary and, in Tolkien's universe, 100% unlikely love story between Tauriel and the dwarf really irritated me. Why these sword and sorcery movies, which is my favorite genre, always feel a need to include a love story is beyond me. The typical fan of these types of stories could not care less about a love story.

Otherwise, I loved the movie. I've seen it five times thus far. Can't wait for the inevitable extended edition.

I'm here for the love story.

I had no problem with a she-elf kinda helping out and killing orcs but I agree the love story thing has no place in this story. And in this Tolkien universe it's not even possible.

Also, I wish Thorin's motives would have been the same as the novels and I suppose they still could be used as a reveal in the last movie

Don't really remember the original book at all, but I loved this one. The 1st was decent, but this one was so much better.

I watched it again last night. Tauriel's addition wasn't terrible at all. The only real thing I had a problem with is not enough screen time for Beorn. I know he will be a huge part of the BoFA so there's that. PJ said we will get more Beorn in the extended edition as well. I personally enjoy these movies. AUJ gets better with each viewing IMO. I feel like we will be able to make a final judgment when BoFA comes out this year. Although they'll never touch the epicness of LOTR, these movies are fun.

Since every movie set in Middle Earth is so good, that is not a negative comment in and of itself. The worst Middle Earth movie is better than 99.99999% of movies ever made. Of course the best Middle Earth movie is better than any other movie ever made.

I like the fact that they've centered Bilbo's burglary around the Arkenstone. Makes sense for movie purposes instead of Bilbo just sneaking in and grabbing treasure. I wonder how they'll start off the last movie considering the cliffhanger we were left with.

I would guess that they start off with Smaug destroying Esgaroth and then Bard killing Smaug?

They had no need to draw out the book into 3 movies.. 2 would have been fine but 3? It was slow and slower at parts.. Big fan of the hobbit and lord of the rings but this was zzzzz

Honestly, I think its a fairly strong concept on doing something with Tolkein's universe. I didn't mind the addition since it's something I think that should have happened at least at some point in Tolkein's work.
