This movie is listed as number 7 movie of all time according to AFI's list. It was on Netflix and I'd never seen it. I just watched it and just don't get the hype. Maybe it's just aged terribly. Or maybe it might be me. But has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

I liked it and could see some deeper meaning. #7 all time? I don't know about that, especially when one considers Nicholas Cage's body of work.

Launched Dustin Hoffman's career and Katherine Ross.. oh my. And the first MILF on screen with Anne Bancroft. "Plastics".

And seeing it on the list before I watched it may give me unreasonable expectations. But I've watched others recently knowing that they were top 100 and enjoyed them like Chinatown, Taxi Driver, and All About Eve. I just found no redeeming qualities about Dustin Hoffman's character or Mrs Robinson. I enjoyed the music though.

The final shot is one of the most well-acted in motion picture history IMO. Without any words, you can tell their relationship was doomed to failure.

Stylistically, it's as cool as ever. Anne Bancroft is hot as ever. But the love story with her daughter always hit me as goofy. Looked great, sounded great, but goofy.

Brilliant, and Buck Henry is a genius.

Not sure I agree with that. I think it's a broader statement about the mundane nature of relationships in general. Love fades. Romance loses its luster, and the scene perfectly expresses that.

I just thought it was just a funny shot of "happily ever after" which in reality is just mundane life for the rest of eternity. That's how I took it atleast.

Was my opinion as well. I appreciate the theme, symbolism, etc. but its just kind of silly. I found it largely uninteresting. That being said, the acting is magnificent.

Ha ha. I can have an opinion. How the hell is The Graduate ranked higher than It's A Wonderful Life?

Do you think there is only one list that ranks movies?

Top ten, all-time? No, but it's one of the best coming-of-age films ever made and is pretty timeless.

Well, it's a movie that is somewhat time specific. While the "coming of age" them is universal, the setting and context in this movie is very much of a certain era. It's a very good movie, but if you're a younger viewer you have to be able to appreciate the era in which it was made.
