You're free to have an opinion. It's just that the opinion can be wrong.

How the hell is The Graduate ranked higher than It's A Wonderful Life?
Well that wasn't your question was it? Your questions was:

The Graduate (1967) overrated?
And the answer is no. It is one of the greatest movies of all time. HOWEVER, it being ranked on a list that shouldn't have rankings in the first place is rather problematic, you are correct. I don't like the absolute ranking of Single Numerical rankings. I'd rather either a scoring mechanism or a tiered mechanism. It's in good company whether or not an argument can be made that something like "It's a Wonderful Life," might be a better movie.

This is one list of many. Yes AFI is well respected, but doesn't make them the definition of movie rankings. The Graduate is a timeless film and was ahead of its time. It still holds up well. The acting was top notch and their use of music was great. I don't think it's the 7th best film of all-time, but it is one of the best films of all-time.

Quite simply, no. To the question if it's overrated that is.

Checked IMDBs list and it ranks 247. I'm ok with that rank. :)

Man IMDB shouldn't make you feel better. Their number one film, of ALL TIME, is Shawshank Redemption. As good as the movie is, that's insanity.
That's WAY worse than Graduate being #7 on any list.

I liked it, but I didn't like Hoffman's acting
It seemed pretty hokey, like films from the 40's and 50's. I didnt believe him as a recent college grad

I thought the same thing. And I just wasn't a huge fan of his character at all anyway.
I watched the movie a year and a half ago, and here were some of my thoughts:

Finally watched this last night. It's one of those "classics" that I hadn't seen.
I really liked it. Anne Bancroft was pretty fiya, and Katharine Ross as Elaine was pretty gorgeous.
What was weird to me was that I had seen the iconic "You're trying to seduce me" scene/picture numerous times, but never realized that it happens so early in the film (only like10 or 12 or so minutes in).
Dustin Hoffman's character was such an awkward dude, and sort of a prick to boot.
All in all, it was a pretty fun/funny movie, and I'm glad I finally got around to watching it. I as a little disappointed in the ending, mainly at how it sort of ended so abruptly and awkwardly. But all in all I really liked it.
Oh, and it immediately made the last 15 minutes or so of Wayne's World 2 much more awesome/funny than before. I never realized just how much of that part was taken from The Graduate. I was cracking up thinking back to W'sW2 as the end kept going.
Any fans of this one? Thoughts? Etc.
ETA: Forgot to mention the soundtrack. It was awesome. S&G are great.

This movie is listed as number 7 movie of all time according to AFI's list. It was on Netflix and I'd never seen it. I just watched it and just don't get the hype. Maybe it's just aged terribly. Or maybe it might be me. But has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?
a classic case of blowback perhaps? You went "knowing" it was ranked #7 all time, so it is extremely difficult for it to live up to that lofty ranking. I think it is a very good movie, but #7 on the AFI list is a bit high, so saying it is over rated is probably fair.

Yes. Way overrated. I don't normally discount movies for there not being any likeable characters in them but I make an exception for this one.

He's kinda right though...most people in the movie are assholes. And Hoffman as the protagonist (I guess) is a complete dickhole.

Oh no I agree that most characters are bad people, but I don't think that makes it a bad film.
Braddock is a complete arse, but there's a little bit of him in everybody, honestly, that's way the movie resonates so well. And he redeems himself in the end a bit, at least I think so. And I think his character's journey is a fairly honest one.
And in a way, I feel the movie may have been dated in the 90s, but it's back to relevancy with the need of modern young adults to reject responsibility so much. I watched the film this summer and just couldn't believe how much more true it's become. Sadly.

Funny enough, fast forward 40 years later, and Mad Men becomes a TV sensation with having pretty much every character be terrible people and set in the same era
I think there might be a pattern here

I think that it's dated, but in a good way.
In the mid-60's, someone graduating from college and not aggressively attacking the job market was something new. Parents that grew up in the depression and fought in WWII were shocked and appalled that their kids didn't have the drive and sense of urgency of their generation.
Pair that with the sexual revolution, and the hypocrisy of parents looking down on the free love movement while they were cheating on their spouses and you have a great look at that mid-decade.
Plus Richard Dreyfus gets his one line of script.
