It depends which ending you saw. The American ending was trash. The unrated dvd should have the alternate ending on it.

Spoilers:
The ending was that her escape was just a dream...she was still trapped in the caves.

How does the original American cut end, I've only seen the unrated version.

From what I can tell from the intarwebz, in teh UK version, she escapes...and in the American version, she escapes, but then it's a dream and she is still trapped in the cave.
Apparently there was a sequel in the UK as well, based on that ending.

typical Hollywood hackery

I saw this at the movie theater. In that ending: She escapes, then sees a vision of her dead friend in the passenger seat, then the screen goes black and the credits roll...
It didnt give any indication that it was a dream and she was still in the cave.

I saw the unrated version and thought it was great. I didn't feel like I was cheated with a cheap happy ending even if the whole dream sequence was a tad unnecessary.
P.S. The Descent is easily one of the best horror movies made since The Thing. Such a badass movie.

Same here. I didn't see it in theaters, so all I can go by is the version I've seen on DVD.
And I agree that it's a pretty legit horror movie.

I enjoyed The Descent, but I didn't think it was particularly spectacular.
The version I saw ended with her in the car.

Actually, it's the other way around. American test audiences didn't like the downbeat original ending, so it was changed to allow Sarah to survive. Strangely enough, the sequel is based upon the American ending as opposed to the original UK one.

The UK ending to this movie is alot better. I saw it a couple of years ago...but i do remember her dreaming that she escaped and then waking up still in the cave and scream.
SPOILER!
As Sarah flees, she hears Juno's screams, which abruptly fall "silent. Sarah falls down a hole and is knocked unconscious. Sarah awakens, scrambles up a huge pile of bones towards daylight, squeezes through a narrow opening onto the surface, runs to her vehicle and speeds off. Suddenly, Sarah sees Juno sitting next to her, her face streaked with blood. Sarah screams and awakens to find herself still in the cavern. She sees her smiling daughter close by and a birthday cake between them. The field of view widens to reveal that Sarah is hallucinating and she is actually staring at a torch. The calls of the crawlers grow louder, but Sarah is oblivious.[1]"
LINK
Also I remember reading on imdb.com that some views of this film believe that she actually ended up killing all of her friends and that the monster was made up in her head. If i can find the link i'll give post it.
