The Americans rewatch

Just finished a full rewatch of the series. Great show that imo is underrated compared to other shows of the era.
One thing that really stood out to me on the rewatch is the Soviets are clearly the “bad guys” and Elizabeth may be series villain.
The USSR and KGB is shown as paranoid, corrupt and amoral.
Philip wrestles with this often but Elizabeth doesn’t really. She cracks a little when the old lady at the repair shop tells her “that’s what evil people say to themselves when they do evil things” about making the world a “better place”.
When they go to Oklahoma Philip looking at the landscape says they (USSR) have all this (space, arable land)
but struggle to feed their own people. Oleg in Moscow investigates what they think are corrupt grocery stores and suppliers stealing form the “people” only to discover it goes to the top and is how the system works.
It’s really a Reagan era American portrait of the USSR and I love that

Or, maybe that’s how it really was and it was just a show set near the collapse of the Soviet Union?

Oh i agree. It was an evil empire and I’m glad they portrayed it that way. It’s definitely not a “woke” show

Remember Philip works the female source into his love interest and then has to have her defect to the Soviet Union to save her.
We get a few scenes of her life there and it is clearly horrible.

I would like to thank Elizabeth’s arse shots for their service.

Love the show but don’t think I could do a rewatch. At least for years.

My #1
Great writing and acting.
A family drama set in the Reagan Cold War Era that actually had me rooting for the bad guys.

Yep, if it was Elizabeth she would have just shot her

Dude frick they traitorous c*nt. She got Gene the computer guy killed and her boss fired because what, she was lonely and fell for someone that was just using her? How she fell for that bs for so many years is amazing. She’s also a coward, if she had come clean and told them she thought he was with that one dept they could have gotten Philip easily and she would have got off maybe in Witness Protection. She deserved a miserable life.
ETA another thing from my rewatch is i developed a burning hatred for Martha

One of the best shows. Very well written.

The thing that also separates this series from others is that it was strong all the way to the last season. Many shows have crummy seasons towards the end. This one was very good to the end.

I also did a full rewatch of this series over December and January. I think after watching Chernobyl, I had a better perspective of the USSR/KGB bureacracy.
The first 3 seasons are definitely the best, but the series finale was among the best of any series.
Really enjoy the music selection in the show.

I loved her in the shower. I hoped she’d take more of them.

Chernobyl is great. It shows the inherent flaw in the system.

I’d throw S4 in there, S5 is the weakest the grain storyline wraps up pretty quick, the whole sub plot with the Vietnamese spy and the defectors kid was kind of lame and the one off with Nazi collaborator and they kill her innocent husband just not as tight of a season.

It’s fantastic. The last episode with Brothers in Arms and With or Without You just perfect. And Tusk in the pilot.

Elizabeth betrays the Center in the last season. That’s why they are forced to leave.
The last season is among the best TV ever.

Agreed.
The fact is...NO ONE got a happy ending in the show, which is rare as frick.

Elizabeth betrays the Center in the last season. .
She goes against the hard line faction within the Center when she finds out they were going to manipulate her reports to depose Gorbachev and they want her to murder a Soviet official who is not giving secrets to the US but negotiating in good faith. She also laments killing the KGB officer (Tatiana). Philip had told her about meeting with Oleg so she knew there were others in the Center that were not part of it. Arkady meets them when they get back into Russia and drives them to Moscow.

No the FBI was on Father Andrei when Philip meets with him. Philip realizes he’s been made and calls her with the signal “it’s topsy turvy at the office”.
