this comment stolen from Tuesday Morning QB
in order to save civilization, they go back in time 85 million years
- why go back so far? a few thousand or even a few hundred would have changed society
-why go back and live amongst man eating dinosaurs
- and probably most important- why go back to a time before a massive meteor whiped out almost all life on earth

Is the base commander that I have seen in commercials the same guy from Avatar? He looks exactly the same and sounds exactly the same.

Why go back and live amongst man-eating dinosaurs?
Is this the new phenomenon known as serving the narrative at the expense of reason?
Such a peculiar recent development in visual media.
Seriously though, has Tuesday Morning Quarterback seen the pilot yet? Perhaps they didn't intend to go back so far in time.

Just a hunch, but knowing the genre in general and the creators of this specifically, i'm pretty sure in the series finale it will be revealed that it wasn't a meteor that killed the dinosaurs etc, but rather the ramifications of the Terra Nova experiment itself.
Thus no record of it, so everyone is unaware when the loop repeats and people are sent back -> lift destroyed, cycle repeats etc.

They're saying the portal takes them back to an alternate reality so no butterfly effect issues.
spoilers

By the way, we learn early on that the “time fracture” actually transports the colonists to an alternate universe’s timeline, so you don’t have to worry about killing your grandma by stepping on a butterfly.

Yeah thats him.
I think I'll dvr this but based on early reviews, I can see this eventually taking up my dvr space.

I'm going to DVR just to see how they answer these questions. On the surface, it looks like a mess.

Terra Nova is from the Battlestar Galactic people?

got to at least check out the pilot. Cant tell you how many shows i've given a chance to only to give up after one or two episodes. It beats another crime scene show, or singing contest!

I know nothing about the show other than what is presented in the promos and these were the two questions that immediately popped into my head.
It will be interesting to see if they attempt to explain it in the initial episode or make the questions part of the show's enigma quality.

So if they are going back to a time before man ever existed then what happens whem man begins to emerge?

I haven't heard much about this show, but saw a commercial for it over the weekend. I'll likely be checking it out since I love dinosaur-type shite. Also, Spielberg is behind it and hopefully has some input on it (although I was disappointed with Falling Skies), so that has me hopeful as well.
Here is the plot per Wiki:
So it looks like they may have gone back that far intentionally. We'll see.

quote:
The show begins in the year 2149, a time when all life on planet Earth is threatened with extinction (suggested in trailers to be due to dwindling worldwide air quality and overpopulation). In an effort to save the human race, scientists develop a time machine allowing people to travel 85 million years back in time to the middle of the Cretaceous period of prehistoric Earth. The Shannon family (father Jim, his wife Elisabeth, and their three children Josh, Maddy and Zoe) join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to Terra Nova, the first human colony on the other side of the temporal doorway. However, they are unaware that the colony is in the middle of a group of carnivorous dinosaurs.
So it looks like they may have gone back that far intentionally. We'll see.

this could go either way. 50/50 depends alot on how literally you view things. I like fantasy but sometimes they just go way to far and turn someithing cool into total junk.

God damn it, this will never be a reason why humans are going extinct. Stupid writers. But I'll tune into this board for reviews. Its different at least.
Why the on Battlestar Galactica? I'm almost done with season 2 and love it. Is it gonna go to absolute shite? Wait, don't answer that.

Each resident doesn't get a barret 82A1?

Well that was a stupid opening sequence
So this is pretty much Avatar meets Jurrasic Park. If there are no sleestak involved I'm bailing out

I can't get over that they institute population controls because of how horrible the environment is but they don't execute maximum security prisoners. It makes no damned sense.
edit: And what's with the shoulder pads on the soldiers?
