Maybe it's because I've seen T2 a thousand times but I'll watch T1 over T2 any day.

T1 any day. I think it's a better movie straight up. The T1 Terminator is one of the greatest villains of all time and the soundtrack is amazing.

Agree, it is two hours of John Conner screaming. I just couldn't get past the punk kid enough to really enjoy the movie.

I think they cast the main characters of the current terminator movies by how loud they can scream.

"WE ARE DEAD, WE ARE ALL DEAD".

T1 loaded the bases. T2 knocked it out of the park.

Love both movies. But T2 is definitely the better movie.

Terminator 2 is easily better than Terminator. Terminator is a solid flick.

I love them both. Can't pick a favorite, although the end of T2 is more powerful.

It's really unfair to compare the two. The Terminator was made on a paper thin budget and became the surprise hit of 1984. Terminator 2 was the most expensive movie ever made at that time and was also one of the most anticipated films of the 1991 summer movie season. You also have to consider they are almost two different genres. The Terminator is more of a sci-fi/horror/slasher film where as Terminator 2 is a sci-fi/action/adventure summer tentpole film.

I have to pretty much agree with this...

however, I must say that I mentioned to my wife when I turned in on SYFY the other night and watched T2 for about ten minutes, that I can still remember being 11 years old and my dad took me to see this at a movie theater in Houston that had a balcony.
It still stands as one of the most memorable movie experiences of my life, because being 11 I thought the theater was sooo cool and the movie was mind blowing awesome and still feel that way to this day when I turn it on at 35

T2 borrows too heavily from the plot of T1 for anyone to really say it's a better movie.

I love them both but over the years I've grown to appreciate the first one a bit more. Maybe because there is such a dearth of mature Sci Fi nowadays I long for the movies like Alien, Blade Runner, and Terminator. Not that T2 was not mature but it was less raw with Uncle Terminator shooting people in the leg . Also Michael Beihn's performance was really good and it makes me wonder wonder what the hell happen to him after The Abyss.

Not borrowed, but expanded upon.

T2 was better. One of the best action movies of all time.

T2 has a legit argument for being the greatest action movie of all time, and the special effects were revolutionary.

Linda Hamilton has some brief nudity in Terminator, none in T2.

Now, I'm not some lowbrow philistine that would claim that by itself makes the original superior but it is kind of a check in the "pro" column, right? Right?

OK, you win. T2 really is better. They spent a ton of money making that movie and it's one of the few where every last nickel of it shows on that screen.

Thoughts?

Terminator is a better film, better story, better script, better acting (IMHO), better package. While a science fiction film, it borders on the serious at all times. Real people got really hurt throughout this film and Reese sacrifices himself at the end.

T2 is really fun and probably executed just a little better than Terminator. However, it is a relatively consequence-free film after the set up stages. Yeah, John's foster parents get killed, guys at the asylum, but in the end, it is just motorcycles, trucks, explosions and 2 robots getting killed in the end. Much less serious. (The engineer's sacrifice was well-done, too, and perhaps the most serious scene in the back half of the film - so I do want to credit that - Cameron was still a top tier storyteller at that point).

Well-done, but the storytelling drops to nothing in the final act - Arnold's thumbs up scene, notwithstanding.
