Watching "The Wire" for the first time. About to finish Season 3.
What are your thoughts on him? I liked how he saw the bigger picture and worked to move towards bigger things. Yes mistakes were made, blah, blah, but his view was the way to go IMO.
I was definitely liking where Stringer was going with everything and was on Team Stringer, buddy was on Team Avon. Just curious if he was seeing something I was missing.

Hard to post an opinion on Stringer without spoilers past the 3rd season. Enjoy the rest of the ride.

Stringer was an intelligent cat, but I was always team Omar

every move stringer made led to his demise...and he was a snitch to boot. After rewatching the series numerous times, it's clear that Stringer's ego got the better of him. He's a great #2, not a great alpha

That said, Omar > All.
“But, the game’s out there, and it’s play or get played. That simple.”
“Boy, you got me confused with someone who repeats himself.”

Stringer Bell thought he was smarter than what he was.

In the end everyone, including Avon realized he was right.

He had the right idea. He just wasn't smart enough to make it in the "straight" world. Or maybe he was just conditioned against interacting the proper way.
Avon had it right about him.
"You know the difference between me and you? I bleed red and you bleed green. I look at you these days, String, you know what I see? I see a man without a country. Not hard enough for this right here and maybe, just maybe, not smart enough for them out there."
Avon had it right about him.

Avon knows who he is. He's just a gangster, I suppose. Stringer plays at something he isn't.

Stringer Bell is a fricking count nugget.
D wasn't snitching on nobody. He just wasn't cut out for the game. No need to take him out at all, but to make him look like he took himself out like a bitch? That's low. And then you taje his girl, and the mother of his child? frick Stringer.
I could go on for days about what a count nugget he is but I'd end up spoiling something for you.

Stringer got completely milked by Clay Davis and didn't even think to include Levy until he lost another $250,000. The best Barksdale crew characters were Bodie and Slim Charles, they both knew their place in the game.
Omar was the best though and was happy to see him and Mr. Bow Tie be the ones to get String.

I fricking loved Stringer Bell. Such a great character. Problem was that he wanted to leave his world behind, and then he went at Avon and didn't pull it off, and then it ended up biting him in the arse hard.
Another problem was that he thought he was better than the game and other people around him. And maybe he was to an extent, but his hubris ended up costing him in the end.
Loved his character arc though. Some of the best Wire scenes involve Stringer.

Stringer had the right idea but had poor execution. At the very least he should have involved his lawyer before trusting a politician like Clay Davis.

Maybe i'm just idealistic, but i don't agree with that type of fatalistic mentality that people are stuck, plenty have moved out of terrible situations. It does become a self fulfilling prophecy for people like Avon, Marlo and even Omar.
Stringer definitely made mistakes, but he was right or at least had the right ideas. In season 2, the best action was to cooperate with Prop Joe. The Barksdale crew had the best territory but shitty product. People like Avon and Marlo are all about street cred, they really don't care about the business as much as getting "respect" which really boils down to other people fearing them. Stringer knew that doesn't last very long, that's why he was always trying to use it as a way to go legit. Maybe, like Michael Corleone, he never could have gone fully legit, but waging war with Marlo was stupid and destroyed the Barksdale organization.
his big mistake in the "legit" world was trying to work with a corrupt politician like Clay"Sheeeeeeeeeet" Davis with out bringing in Levy at least.
