I need to do a rewatch on The Wire. It's been about a year.
Right now, I'm watching Malcolm in the Middle. I missed so much shite when I was younger.

It's almost impossible for me to distinguish my rankings between 1, 2, 3, and 4. 5 is last, but still great television.

i think 4 gets a lot of love due to cheap emotional ploys and kids
seasons 1-3 are a single piece of work
season 4 and 5 are like sequels

Nah, 4 is really good. Cheap emotional ploys? lol it's essentially the root of the problem in Baltimore and places like it.

4 is my second worst next to 5

That's a good way to put it.
People get worked up because two wasn't all about the ghetto but overlook how much happen in that season to progress the story.

5 is on it's own plane
2, 3, 1, 4...without much separation
then 5
2, 3, 1, 4...without much separation
then 5

I was one of the people who did not enjoy where season 2 was going, but after rewatching the series, season 2 is definitely one of the best. I really enjoyed the Sobatka family.

Man can't believe D'Angelo went out like that I thought he was a main guy throughout the series.

2 was the best IMHO. The first season was great and when two came around you knew that this show would be legendary.

3 is the best
That final scene with Stringer and Avon on the roof was art.

s3 also had the best ending montage of the series - When Avon and the gang are in the courtroom and Marlo gives him the nod

That's bullshite, and you know it.
Season 4 is the second best season of the best show I've ever seen.
I do agree with most that season two becomes better once you finish the series. I have them ranked 1, 4, 3, 2, 5, with 1-4 being close and 5 being on its own farther down the list. Season five, while I liked it, just seemed to get weird (I won't say why for spoiler purposes)..but at the same time, it did such an AWESOME job of tying everything together. And the final ending montage makes the whole season worth it.
GOAT show IMO.
ETA: based on the OP though, I forgot to say that I was actually spoiled on Stringer on this board. I don't remember what thread it was, but I think it was a TWD thread, and someone dropped that bomb and I was in the middle of watching The Wire. I was fricking PISSED. They felt bad about it, but the damage had already been done. That's why when Im watching a show on HBO now, I just assume everybody is gonna die at some point, so that I'm not really disappointed when it happens.

during its first run, i had 4 up there at #2. i did a re-watch like a year and a half ago or so, and it just didn't really hold up. when the shock of the resolution isn't there anymore, it just didn't have the same effect on me.
and for some reason, hamsterdam in season 3 did the opposite. i used to have 3 right next to 5 due to beilevability purposes, but as i got older and became more a part of the system, i realized that kind of shite kind of does happen. not to those lengths, obviously, but, for example, how many DWI checkpoints does NBR get? not many. also with shows like gangland you do see areas that are so hot that cops do not go there. so that believability bumped up 3 to me

Still bullshite, even after watching and knowing what would happen the end of that season still makes me want to cry. The situation with the kids, and Bubbles especially. Last time I watched, I wanted to cry so bad with Bubbles, but I didn't. I'm a man.
I agree with you about 3 though. After working in public sector, I see how everything is about your stats.

Great story about Royo - while working on The Wire, they were on location and someone offered him heroin because he really looked like he needed to fix.
He calls it his "Street Oscar" - therefore, with the overall quality of this ensemble cast (not even Dominic Allen's Mcnulty is truly a lead, although he's the closest) - one of the best large casts ever assembled (again, look at The Sopranos, The Shield, GoT - the usual suspects, so to speak, for these types of discussions - BB didn't really have quite as large a cast), and Royo's performances as Bubbles probably the best of the show. I would say Wendell Pierce (Bunk), Michael K. Williams (Omar) and Idris Elba (Stringer) - probably in that next tier.
And even the 4th and 5th tier actors - many shows would have been glad to get that level of acting out of their top line cast.
