From what I have read it appears to not be as good as the first film but Into Darkness proves that the first film was no fluke.

Here comes the Star Trek fanboys, who aren't as cool as us Star Wars fans, to argue and stomp their feet.

Go mindmeld a power outlet.

This movie is gonna rule.

I always hated the series. But I've heard you don't need to like it and enjoy the movies. True?

I just read a mildly negative review on AICN (not that I ever put a lot of stock in what they have to say).

As a warning, the review was very spoiler heavy.

yeah there are a few twists and plot points with this film. If you want no spoilers, don't read anything about it.

My brother is hesitant to watch the first film saying that he doesn't know much about Star Trek and would feel lost.

I told him that all you really need to know about Star Trek in order to get into this new franchise is that it existed in the first place. The most basic pop culture details of some characters will help, but all you really have to know about Star Trek going into the 2009 film is that it existed at all. The 2009 film will do the rest

If this helps, hard to explain without spoiling it.

I just read IGN's review and they were pretty good at not spoiling anything.

Yay!

I'm so glad it's at least getting good reviews from the critics.

That bodes well for the audience's experience.

Meh, 7.6 average and 74 on metacritic.

Some guy compared it positively to First Contact, and that film blew.

Well, if this one is anything like the last that is true.

Which series did you hate? TNG? All of them? Anyway, there is little argument that the new films are more mainstream.

And have little in common with the content or spirit of what "Star Trek" is/was.

It's like Star Trek, if it were made by the Star Wars people.

Did you say that intentionally?

Considering JJ Abrams involvement in both franchises in case you didn't know.

Don't disagree at all.

Episodes I-III were bad, but if you just take plot holes and bad acting and don't worry about them, there is some joy that can be had.

Abrams just used a cheat code and rebooted (or alternate universe'd) the entire series.

I don't expect the near perfection of the 2009 film.

As long as they don't screw the pooch and make an entertaining movie with a reasonably coherent story, I'll be satisfied.
