My parents watched SNL weekly from its very inception to about 7 years ago (citing lack of humor as a reason for stopping). They always raved about John Belushi and Eddie Murphy. They were also big fans of Phil Hartman (as was I).

Thing about Hartman is, I've never seen any of his good stuff. I watched em and didn't laugh...at all.

for my money it's Ferrell

if the last few years had some edgier and more off the wall writing, I think Moynihan & McKinnon would be way up there too, especially McKinnon

every single character and bit part, he catches your eye and draws a laugh. It's really rare, and is one of the main factors for everyone else named in this thread

While on SNL? Gotta agree with those who say Hartman. He was money. Overall? Bill-fricking-Murray. Clearly.

John Belushi was a man among boys. And Gilda Radner was the Queen.

I have to say, tonight made me appreciate Chris Farley's place in SNL history a lot more, and in my thread from a few weeks ago, I think I'd replace Tracy Morgan with him in my all star line up. The guy was great and perfect, and very memorable. He was more than just a fat bastard, he was an artist and an original, and he has been missed. It just makes me sad that people like Kevin James just think that his humor is totally dependent on him being fat, when it wasn't. Farley's hilarity is from his energy and passion, and James really has none of that. Kevin James is just fat and falls down without any of the heart, and thus he sucks.

I have to agree with this. Tonight proved to me...you can't just have a morbidly obese person up on stage ranting and raving and breaking tables and it automatically be hysterical. Melissa McCarthy's rendition of Matt Foley did nothing for me. Farley had that extra gear that put his sketches over the top.

Yeah, but some of that was due to the fact he was coked out of his mind a lot of the time. Don't get me wrong, I loved him on SNL, and still laugh my arse off at his sketches. But the energy that set him apart had a lot to do with the cocaine he was constantly using.

i think most people under 30 will say Ferrell but im 35 and for my money you cant beat the early/mid 90s crew

for that reason, my tops are

Hartman
Myers
Carvey
Farley
Rock

those are hard to beat IMO. Eddie Murphy is up there too. I would put Ferrell in the 5-8 range

Lets be frank. They weren't joking about the other cast member, cocaine. And it certainly wasn't just Farley. He unfortunately got hooked and suffered the consequences.

Yep, no doubt. Hence the joke they made about the producer "Cocaine" in last night's show.

I was hoping for a clip of the Zagat's Guide sketches.

Kevin James was quite the stand-up comedian. Now he gets paid to do nothing. Can't blame him for that. And I know for a fact that he is very charitable and an all-around good guy.

This is why I don't get the universal hate for Sandler. Dude takes care of his buddies. You think Alan Covert would be working right now if not for being one of Sandlers friends?

Its not like hes forcing you to pay money to see his movies. And people keep doing so. So Sandler spends his days making movies with all his best friends and some random hot chick cast as his wife. If he posted on the OT, he'd be worshiped.

And back on topic, I've got to go with Will Ferrell. Eddie Murphy and Phil Hartman are up there for me too. But when I think of certain cast members, you associate them with certain skits. Murphy and Buckweat. Dana Carvey and Garth. But Ferrell had so many good skits. Cowbell. Patriotic shirt day. Jeopardy. The Roxbury Twins. Janet Renos Dance Party. (Which to this day I start waving my arms up and down instinctively every time I hear My Sharona.) You could go on for a long time.

I disagree with Dana. Whenever I think of him I think of a number of his sketches like Church Lady (Who doesn't remember the catch phrase "Well isn't that special"?), George H. W. Bush (who doesn't remember the catch phrase "Not gonna do it"?), Ross Perot, Hans of Hans & Franz, along with Garth. Heck, he played both H. W. Bush and Perot in one skit that in a presidential debate with Hartman doing Clinton that was legendary.

You might associate him with only one skit, but there are a ton of skits and characters that I associate him with.
