Rian Johnson says Empire Strikes Back would have been criticized if it came out today

Looking back, was any of the criticism fair?

Johnson: No, no.

Hamill: We were happy to ruin people's childhoods.

Johnson: The thing is though, "no" in terms of, "Oh wow, they're right, I shouldn't have done that," but "fair" in terms of every single "Star Wars" thing that comes out, every fan has stuff they love, stuff they hate about it. Every movie has its lovers and its haters. Every single one going back to the originals.

Hamill: We were so lucky there wasn't social media when "Empire Strikes Back" came out.

Johnson: Yeah, "Empire" would have gotten roasted. If you look at the criticism of "Last Jedi," can you imagine what they would have said about Luke just getting his arse handed to him by Vader? Oh my God.

Hamill: Right, the hand getting cut off, we lost and dad Vader.

He's correct. It was criticized back then.

Getting Hamill to legitimize their crap. Not unexpected, but sleazy nevertheless.

Um...that a Sith whipped up on a would-be Jedi who had a few months of training? A lot more believable than a scavenger driving the Falcon and beating Kylo Ren head to head the same week.

WTF is Johnson smoking here? That’s the stupidest fricking defense of his bad movie.

Studio higher ups must be getting nervous.

For the first couple of months, they brushed off any criticism by either pointing to the box office or claiming the hate was limited to a few misogynists. But lately it seems Rian is giving a weekly "explanation" and enlisting everybody from JJ Abrams to Mark Hamill to Santa Claus to help him sell it.

They are on crack. It was Empire that made Star Wars what it is today.

Nothing can repair it at this point, but Rian isn't going to shut up.

Yep, but Empire hits all the checkmarks of a competent film. This doesn’t come close to it. There’s no protagonist, there’s no central narrative aside from nihilism, every scene you can fly a 737 through plot holes, and it betrays old characters. Sure the timeline is iffy in Empire, but other than that it was great and critics at the time weren’t expecting something that dark.

WTF does that have to do with the criticism of TLJ?

This guy is fricking clueless.

And everybody still thinks Empire is the best Star Wars film...how would it get roasted unless people just hated Star Wars?

I’ve been a lifelong Star Wars fan. Skipped The Last Jedi in the theater because the reviews were so bad. Just finished watching it a few minutes ago. My bar was really low for it and it’s as bad as every one of you said.

Rian Johnson can go frick himself for what he did to Luke Skywalker.

It's hilarious at this point. The execs are freaking out, but their plan of putting Rian Johnson in front of microphones to defend the movie is backfiring so hard.

My wife is watching it for the first time right now. It went from $4-5 digital rental on Vudu a week or so ago, to 99 cent rental on Vudu tonight. I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that can only mean it isn't selling well.

I'm on Vudu right now and it's $4.99 for SD and $5.99 for HDX.

The fact they are still in campaign mode says a lot. They are desperately trying to shape the narritive of discontentment to save the future of their SW properties.

Something really disturbing about what they have done to Mark Hamill though. Normally the PR move would be to just limit press exposure if an actor levels legitimate criticism of a project he is involved with. Him doing a complete fricking 180 screams studio pressure and draws even more negative attention. Every time I see Hamill take part in these interviews it's like staring into the soulless eyes of a carnival monkey.

Almost sounds like he thinks TLJ is a better movie...

It’s cognitive dissonance. Even Jedi masters are susceptible to it.

Watched it for the first time last night since seeing it in theaters. I wanted to like it. I tried to like it. It’s simply just a really bad movie. Rose and the purple hair chick are fricking awful.

Maybe I got a deal, but I spent 99 cents and am watching it right now.

I can guarantee the only conflict in Mark's head right now is having to defend a shitty movie and pissing off Disney. The guy is a talented 66 year old voice-over actor and someone reminded him he better not piss off Mickey Mouse.
