And to make it worse, once they realized this, instead of finding the nearest water and throwing it on everyone in sight (ya know, like a normal human would do) I think someone takes a baseball bat and tried to like hit a home run with the water glass into an alien. Gimme a break.

He didn't know about their weakness being water when he grabbed the baseball bat, he didn't figure it out until some water spilled on the alien and burned it. That being said, the twist in Signs was pretty stupid

I'm really not bothered at all by the water toxicity for the aliens in Signs. I mean, isn't the inability for invading extraterrestrials to survive in our climate the same "twist" that was used to resolve the Spielberg War of the Worlds movie?

If you really can't enjoy the movie because of that, maybe consider the theory that the creatures weren't aliens at all, but rather demons. It's not even that far fetched- Mel Gibson's character makes at least two references to the daughter being an angel, and those cups of hers could be "holy water." The "aliens" bumble around naked and solo and also neglected to bring any weapons for the invasion? Also, I don't believe the movie made clear that just any water would hurt them, IIRC we only see water from the daughter's cups hurting the one alien- but near the end of the film there is a blurb on a news station about an ancient method for killing the creatures which was rediscovered in three cities in the Middle East.

The logistics of the twist isn't really what's important, at least in my view- the movie has a really good crisis-of-faith and redemption theme and I thought it was acted, directed, and paced really well. I'm not sure if this is the right word, but the film is an allegory for spiritual conflict and doubt and overcoming those "demons."

I gave the major reason I didn't like it in a recent thread concerning M. Night.

On top of all that, the entire family is "too special" to be relatable to.

SPOILERS

1. Mom is killed by M. Night's cameo character. Mom gives oracular advice while dying ("Swing away.")
2. Little girl is weird and just happens to leave unfinished glasses of water around everywhere.
3. Boy has asthma so airway is miraculously blocked off at the end.
4. Joaquin has minor league baseball records for home runs and strike outs, keeps bat in living room...SWING AWAY!

Bonus: M. Night's cameo character somehow hears/knows that they don't like water.

Spielberg War of the Worlds movie

Geez...does he actually get credit for coming up with that story? (Way older than that movie.) Also, wasn't climate that did them in but microbes. That's quite different than invading a place that you can see 71% of the surface is covered by a substance that is lethal to you.

So that would explain why the one "demon" in their house got burned by the water. Does not explain how the rumor of them not liking water got around before that or why all the rest of the "demons" left.

Additions:

I think the weird son accounted for this (weapons) from one of the books he was reading. Saying they wouldn't use their advanced technology in order to not destroy the resources they came for. Not sure why they were naked, however.

M. Night's character basically said "they don't like water, so I'm going up by the lake." So...seems like it's any water to me.

I couldn't really enjoy it because I figured out the big twist just 5-10 minutes into the movie. My wife is STILL pissed that I blurted it outa d ruined the movie. I really need to rewatch it now that many years have passed - maybe I'll have a new appreciation for it.

I also think The Village gets a lot of unjust hatred. It was a really solid thriller, even if you figured out the twist (which I call bullshite on most that say they did).

This.

I actually really enjoyed the movie, and I watch parts of it all of the time when channel surfing. It just bothers me that they have the technology to get all the way to Earth from wherever they came from, yet they didn't have the technology to see Earth is 75% water.

That does seem far fetched to me and would actually diminish my enjoyment of the movie

So your main reason is the water. Which is understandable, but there are literally millions and millions of square miles on Earth that aren't covered with water. And on top of that, the moisture in the air obviously doesn't affect the aliens at all. Now rain could surely be an issue, but humans are capable of keeping themselves dry during the rain, so I'd imagine a super advanced alien race could figure out how to avoid getting wet from the rain. 29% of the Earth not being covered by water is a LOT of fricking land.

4. Joaquin has minor league baseball records for home runs and strike outs, keeps bat in living room...SWING AWAY!

And this is why the movie is so great IMO. Because the problem comes in when people view it solely as an "alien movie." It's not a movie about aliens at all. It's a movie about one thing: faith. mel Gibson's character is the main character, and .....hell, I'll just post an argument I've made in the past about it:
quote:

This will sound like I'm being a dick, but I'm not...but you are one of the people I always talk about when I discuss the hatred of Signs. You completely missed the point of the entire movie.

Signs isn't a movie about aliens. It's a movie about faith. More specifically, it's about a religious man (priest) who has lost his faith and him rediscovering it. And the water being there, the son having an asthma atrack right as the alien sprays the toxin, Merrill being a baseball player/"swing away" with the bat right there, etc. All of it fell into place perfectly on purpose, and it all helped Mel Gibson find his faith again.

And as far as the water thing, there are any number of explanations that could suffice for that. First off, this planet is 2/3 water, but there is a shite pile of land around. So them coming here isn't stupid. Secondly, things like dew or moisture in the air...clearly those small amounts of water don't affect them. They sent scouts and later attacked (this was directly mentioned in the movie actually), so clearly that moisture wasn't an issue. For example, I'm highly allergic to poison ivy, but can walk through a field of it and be fine as long as I don't touch it and whatnot. Even though the earth is littered with water, it's pretty easy to avoid.

It's not a movie "about aliens." It's a movie about faith. And all of those things lining up absolutely perfectly is the whole point. They're the things that bring a former man of faith back onto his path of faith.

I actually love Signs

The water thing doesn't bother me that much. because the aliens were there to harvest humans, not just invade and take over the earth. If you listen to the radio during the basement scene there is an account of someone seeing bodies dragged away by the aliens.

I loved how for pretty much the entire move other than the final showdown all this tension is built without clearly seeing the aliens at all (a hand, a leg, silhouette on the roof).

Also I think the camera shots were well chosen; my favorite is after surviving the night and they are back upstairs and they wheel in the TV into the room you can see the reflection of the alien in the TV before the big reveal)

Right...and that land is covered with countless organisms that are composed primarily of water, use water to live daily, and many of which, that when they respire, release water vapor that easily condensates on surfaces. So...about 7 billion of these organisms (well, a lower number because not all are "adults") are intelligent beings that will EASILY figure out and spread the word that that abundant substance on earth is deadly to these invaders. Once figured out...BOOM!...unlimited supply of weapon against aliens. Certain areas would be uninvadeable at certain times (Pacific Northwest with rains almost daily in places, areas of rampant fog/mist).

So, potentially a person sneezing into the face of one of the aliens could blind them. Hand to hand combat with a sweaty human... Plus, much more things that other terrestrial organism on 29% of the planet do with water.

(This same stuff can be applied to your rebuttal from one of your previous posts concerning poison ivy. Poison ivy won't chase you to throw its oils on you and doesn't know that you're allergic. People would load up with SuperSoakers and wipe the aliens out in no time.)

You mean to tell me that all that time that Bruce Willis was a ghost and didn't know it, not once did he go to buy a gum or a newspaper or a pop and notice nobody would respond to him? He was Haley Joel's shrink for quite a stretch of time. What kind of life did he lead? He wasn't talking to his wife so that didn't seem out of the ordinary to him, but you think he would have noticed her screaming and freaking out every time he took a shower? I mean as far as she's concerned, the shower was just turning on by itself not to mention the stove, the microwave, and tv among others. What that poor woman had to live through was at least as bad (if not worse) as Haley Joel.
