I didn;t like Avatar, it's opening is not the nest, but it went on to become the highest grossing movie ever. I guess if anything the point was that movie openings should be seen as a marathon and not a sprint.

Movies like Avatar are by far the exception. It "had legs" as they say. It was a unique cinematic experience we had not experienced yet. I personally saw Avatar 4 times in the theater, the most I have ever seen any movie in the theater. I have seen it once on Blu Ray since then.
Avatar also benefited from a dearth of other movies, same as Frozen when it came out.
Most movies make about 40% of their box office on the opening weekend. A movie has to have incredible word of mouth to continue performing like Avatar and Frozen did, and of course rely heavily on repeat viewings.

My wife couldn't hold it together... cried the last 5 minutes and all through target afterward.
