We still had fan 'zines. I had heard we would get a glimpse behind the mask. I still thought it was great but it wasn't at the top of the list of awesome things in Empire.

No home computers, much less cell phones or social media. Got cable for the first time right around then.

If the studio didn't want it revealed, I don't think the media would have printed or broadcast it. People had some manners and ethics back then.

I swear to G-d we had this thread not a month ago.

It was leaked, but leaks weren't like today. It was more like "rumor has it" - rather than actual confirmed type leaks.

Not only was the information new to me and my friends, but after the movie we discussed if it was true or was Vader lying.

I thought to myself that Vader looked like a puszy when the mask came off.

I had no idea. Lucas had allowed a rumor to leak that Obi Wan Kenobi was Luke's father as a smokescreen for the actual reveal. I was just a kid though, so I wasn't even aware of that. The movie was so big, you would not believe. Everybody went to see it, boys, girls, moms, dads, grandparents, everyone. I really don't know what franchise to compare it to now, maybe Harry Potter? I remember the night we went to see it we waited in a line that wrapped around the theater and down the sidewalk on the side of the building. Really, really huge.

I was 12 when it came out (prime age for SW stuff).

Unfortunately, as I remember it, the novelization was released prior to the movie, and my mom and I were going to take an Amtrak to Chicago. She bought me the book, and I read it on the train ride up. So it was spoiled for me...

I didn't believe it at first, and didn't want to.

There was no reveal. Only rumors but nobody believed them. When it actually happened, I literally jumped out of my seat and yelled "yeah! yeah!" and spiked my coke into a guys head in the row in front.

For some reason, even after the movie came out, a lot of people still didn't believe that he was Luke's father. I don't know why. Even Luke has accepted it by the end of the movie. Maybe because the dialogue was so awful, it just slipped right past a lot of people.
