Sadly without the Atomic bomb, the US would've been forced into the largest sea invasion in human history this side of Troy, far surpassing D-day, (hell, the Battle of Okinawa involved more ground troops, landing on the beach-heads than D-day.)

Obviously, we get to make moral justifications and judgments from 80 years later but I still think it’s insane that people think Japan would have surrendered without the second bomb. The fact that a second bomb had to be dropped is proof enough.

I thought Nolan handled the moral conundrum of the bomb itself well. I don’t know his politics and I like him more for it, but I felt like there was some sympathy towards Communism in there and I look more poorly on Communists (in the 40s-60s) now in my 40s than I did in my 20s and 30s. McCarthy wasn’t wrong.

I don’t have a problem with how they displayed the bomb conundrum, but I do think they downplayed the role some scientists played in promoting use of the bomb.

Bill Halsey who was a very aggressive, politically incorrect, general even said:

“The first atomic bomb was an unnecessary experiment. It was a mistake to ever drop it.” He blamed the scientists, who “had this toy and they wanted to try it out, so they dropped it. It killed a lot of Japs, but the Japs had put out a lot of peace feelers through Russia long before.”

Lots in the military were against use of the bomb which you can read about below. It wasn’t just scientists trying to warn an ignorant public.

Regarding Communism, I’m not sure the movie is so much sympathetic to Communism as it downplays its influence on Oppenheimer. It’s pretty believable he could have fed information on the bomb to the Soviets himself. At the very least he was loose on protecting the information from the Soviets, and there’s not a doubt in mind that had the Soviet Union been fascists, Oppenheimer would have supported development of the H-Bomb.

I thought the movie was great. Agree it didn’t seem 3 hours long.

Oppenheimer is probably my second favorite movie featuring Einstein. The best movie featuring Einstein remains IQ with Walter Matthau and the incomparable Meg Ryan. Wahoo.

Saw it last Wednesday in imax... probably the best cinematic experience since Titanic. I probably enjoyed the experience more than the actual film, but I'll definitely see it again.

First 20 minutes were a bit jarring and reminded me slightly of Natural Born Killers, but it settled down after that.

8/10 with serious potential to reach 9/10 on rewatch

Yeah it seemed like they made the bomb really fast. I kept waiting for that “breakthrough” moment where they have an epiphany and figure out how to make it work but it kinda went from the drawing board straight to “ok it’s ready to test”

The challenges of the Manhattan Project were always the materials- there really wasn't an epiphany.

They didn't even test the uranium bomb (Little Boy) because they were so confident it would work

This is categorically false. There were a handful of Japanese officials who, without authorization and without the knowledge of the Japanese government, reached out to the Soviets to mediate a negotiated settlement between them and the United States. However, the Soviets had no intention of doing that because they wanted a piece of Manchuria and northern Japan for themselves.

This.

As soon as news broke that scientists had successfully split an atom, physicists knew that an atomic bomb was feasible to make. The problem was generating enough plutonium/uranium to start a fission reaction.

The uranium bomb was the simplest design and, as you pointed out, scientists were so confident that it would work that they didn't even bother testing it.

Saw it again today this time with my wife. Haven’t been on this thread in a few days, but last weekend read through it and didn’t see two things mentioned that she picked up on.

She noticed the glove holding down Jean’s head in the water right away. I missed that both times!

Also she postulated the JFK conspiracy since Strauss was being portrayed as vindictive against those who opposed him.

Great seeing it again though from knowing what was coming (mostly).

ETA: we watched it on the anniversary of the bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, August 5, 1945

yeah it’s a flash.

everything i’ve read seems to indicate she was a very unstable young lady, but at the very least Oppenheimer was maybe wondering if He caused her death directly by seeing her

he was pretty removed from
power by the time Kennedy was killed.

Were the terms “Russians” and “Soviets” really as interchangeable at the time as they made it seem in the movie?
I felt like the first time they used “Soviets” was well over an hour into the movie

YES

Born in 1964, raised in the 70s and 80s. "Russians" was used ALL THE TIME as recently as my own time, before the dissolution of the USSR in the early 1990s.

Russia was, of course, the dominant nation of the USSR.

Whether it was the space program, the military, or international intrigue, "Russia/Russians" was commonly used:

- 1957

Sting- "Russians" (1985)
"I hope the Russians love their children, too"

Great movie. Audio is questionable at times. I was like WTF is this.

I saw it in 70mm IMAX, then again in digital IMAX. The sound was perfect in 70mm and horrendously loud in digital.

I don’t think I’ll ever see another Nolan film for the first time in anything but 70mm IMAX.

We watched it on digital with a 70 ft projection screen with Dolby audio. There was only one time that I couldn’t quite hear what was said and it was when Kitty said something to Oppenheimer right before he rode off to the testing. Otherwise the audio was alright. At times it was extremely loud but you know that going in with Nolan.

You could’ve heard a pin drop in the theater when the test happened. It was amazing.

And some dork in our row kept pulling his phone out (it had one of those fricking flashing lights when someone text) and finally the guy behind him said “put up your fricking phone” to everyone’s delight.

Read a bit about him. Vindictive may be accurate but he had a pretty storied career and doesn’t appear to be a terrible person in most of his activities.
