What I have found in my life is the people that started watching the show after the beginning liked green ranger more...but those that were old enough to watch it from the beginning choose red ranger.
I choose neither. This came out a little too late to grab my attention.

Jason was the leader. And then they realized that Tommy was much more marketable. Better actor and much better costume with the cool shoulder pads. So they shifted to Tommy and wrote off the original red ranger so the replacement would fall in line.

Red was clearly the leader. He was kind of a tool, though, and green was cooler, but Red clearly made the critical decisions at the end of the day.

When Tommy turned into the white ranger he becomes the leader. Season one red ranger was the leader and in season two white ranger is the leader.

Watched it from the beginning as a kid and the red ranger was initially. Eventually Tommy the green ranger became the main character and thus the leader. He was officially when he went from green to white
